SNU GSIS BK21 FOUR Program hosts various events inviting prominent figures to deliver distinguished lectures with our Special Lecture Series.

For our sixteenth session, we are inviting Professor David Leheny from GSAPS, Waseda University.

He will talk on the theme of "Soft Power and Reading Emotion in Politics."

*Abstract:

This presentation examines emotion in international relations, focusing in particular on the idea of soft power. Rather than taking emotion as an independent variable, observable through data derived from social psychological experiments, that can be used to explain or predict specific international behavior, we might instead view it instead as an element and outcome of narratives used to rationalize and comprehend patterns of global relations. Soft power, itself often understood for obvious reasons to be distinctly emotional in nature, provides an excellent opportunity to examine it, though less as an actual quality in international affairs, and more as an emotionally-laden commitment to durable national narratives.

Participation is mandatory for BK Fellows (absence in BK events may affect next semester's selection).
