SNU GSIS BK21 FOUR Program hosts various events inviting prominent figures to deliver distinguished lectures with our Special Lecture Series.

The lecture provides historical and current analysis of the human rights situation inside the DPRK and how the UN human rights system has approached these issues. It refers to the 2014 landmark report of the Commission of Inquiry on human rights in the DPRK as a baseline, and uses this as a means to illustrate the function of the Human Rights Council and its investigative bodies. It also provides an overview of relevant areas of international law, including human rights, humanitarian, criminal, and refugee law. We then discuss recent engagement of the UN human rights system on human rights in the DPRK, which includes an introduction to Universal Periodic Review, Treaty Bodies, and Special Procedures. We will discuss the ongoing work of the UN Human Rights Office to gather relevant information, in particular from escapees, and to promote accountability for crimes against humanity committed in the DPRK.

This session is open to all SNU GSIS students, but attendance is mandatory for BK fellows. (Attendance and meaningful participation will be highly recognized for next semester's selection.)
