For our twenty sixth session, we are inviting Korea Foundation Chair, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Director of Institute for Korean Studies of Indiana University Bloomington, Seung-kyung Kim.

She will talk on the theme of "Shifting Social Norms Surrounding Dating and Marriage in 21st Century South Korea".

Please refer to below for further details:

*Abstract:

As South Korea underwent the process of compressed modernization in the late twentieth century, it experienced dramatic shifts in almost all aspects of social life. An examination of dating and marriage practices in 21st century South Korea reveals just how much the society has changed during the past few decades. The rising age at first marriage, overall declining marriage rates, alarmingly low fertility rates, and rising divorce rates are some of the issues related to dating and marriage that are confronting Korean society in the 21st century. This talk will explore how South Korean millennials navigate changing expectations about dating and marriage in the precarious social and economic environment, and how their experiences with those of millennials in other rapidly transforming countries in the East Asian region.

Participation is mandatory for BK Fellows (absence in BK events may affect next semester's selection).
