Campus Asia, Field Trip to JeonjuOn May 26th ~ 27th, 2017, a group of 9 students from the Campus Asia Program enjoyed two-day field trip in Jeonju. They visited Han-ok maeul, the Korean traditional housing place to stay, which includes Geong-gi jeon and Omok-dae. As an experience, they enjoyed rail biking while watching beautiful sceneries of Jeonju, made night stand with dried flower and Han-ji, the Korean traditional paper. They also participated making rice cake and enjoyed delicious hand-made rice cake. They experienced Han-bok, the Korean traditional clothing and went to many places inside the traditional village. During the trip, they enjoyed delicious and traditional foods of Jeonju, including Jeonju bibimbap and Tteok-gal bi. During the trip, they experienced the essence of traditional area of Korea, learn about the life style.

Campus Asia Second Field Trip in SeoulOn April 28th, 2017, a group of 9 students from the Campus Asia Program enjoyed one-day field trip in Seoul. The tight schedule was full of popular tourist’s spots in Seoul. They visited Cheong Gye Cheon Museum to learn about the past, present and future of Cheonggyecheon and the changing face of the city. After that, they walked along the Cheonggyecheon to Gyeongbokgung Palace to attend the 3rd Royal Culture Festival. They enjoyed various exhibitions and performances such as Hanbok Photo Exhibition and Korean Traditional Music Concert. Also they went to Jogyesa to celebrate Lantern Festival for Buddha’s birthday and Insa-dong Street to experience focal point of Korean traditional culture and crafts.

Professor Dukgeun Ahn awarded SNU Education AwardProf. Ahn Dukgeun has been awarded the Spring 2017 SNU Education Award. The SNU Education Award is given to faculty members who exhibit outstanding capability in education and student guidance. The award is given to only 10 faculty members each semester. Along with the award, Professor Ahn was credited with receiving the best lecture evaluations each semester. Additionally, Professor Ahn was recognized for developing and advancing the GSIS curriculum as well as for providing students with excellent academic advice. Professor Ahn's acceptance of the award was especially noteworthy as it marked the first time a GSIS professor had been selected as a recipient. Reflecting on this, Professor Ahn expressed his wish to share his success with all of GSIS, saying that “the award was given not only to myself". In a selfless act, the professor offered half of the award (KRW10,000,000) to GSIS as a development fund for educational research. To commemorate Professor Ahn's acceptance of the award, GSIS held a special lecture on May 17, 2017. The lecture focused on Professor Ahn's academic passion and was titled "Academic Development of International Commerce and Current Challenges in the World Trading System”.

Japan's Security Policy in Changing World SystemOn May 25th, 2017, Tanaka, Akihiko, the president of National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, gave a special lecture on “Japan’s Security Policy in Changing World System.” In the lecture, he not only discusses the characteristics of the changing world system and the specific features of East Asian within the world system, but also analyzed the evolution of Japan’s security policy. He explained that the ambivalent nature of East Asian international relations, characterized by both economic prosperity and geopolitical tensions, has shaped and fostered the evolution of Japan’s security policy since the end of the Cold War. He argues that while there have been many changes in the legal frameworks of Japan’s security policy and the Self Defense Forces, these changes are taking place within the framework of its alliance with the US and at the backdrop of still significant pacifist sentiments.

He gave a presentation on Inequality and social outcome, with evidence on inequality school enrolment in Mexico, inequality to relative deprivation (RD) and relative satisfaction (RS), RD and school enrolment in Mexico, RD, RS and mental health in Mexico. Students were given the chance to discuss various relevant topics with the Associate Professor about inequality in developing countries and its implication on education and health outcomes as well as policy related considerations.

GATT Accession 50 Anniversary for KoreaOn April 13, 2017, Kora International Trade Association (KITA) and SNU GSIS were pleased to host the forum to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) accession for Korea. The forum invited 8 trade experts to present and discuss on the topic, “The History of 50-year Korean Trade Liberalization and its Future Path.” Session I began with the overview of the sub-topic, “the 50-year History of Korean Trade Liberalization” that was moderated by Professor Dukgeun Ahn of SNU GSIS. The debate regarding the given sub-topic was discussed by 3 panelists: Seung Wha Chang, a professor of Law at SNU; Jung Taik Hyun, the President of Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP); and JongKap Kim, the Chairman and CEO of Siemens Ltd. Seoul. The panel mainly talked about the major historical trade disputes that Korea has been involved in after joining the GATT. Session II followed with the overview of the sub-topic, “The Future Goal and Role of Korean Trade Policy” that was moderated by Yoon Heo, the Dean and a professor of GSIS, Sogang University. The debate about the given sub-topic was continuously discussed by other panelists: Taeho Bark, a former trade minister and a professor of SNU GSIS; Byung-Rin Yoo, a visiting professor of College of Life and Science, Kyungpook National University; and Byung-il Choi, a professor of Ewha Womans University. The panel mainly talked about Korea’s future direction in terms of trade policy, and the strategy to enhance trade negotiating capacity.

FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series 2: The Economic Consequences of President TrumpOn April 12, 2017, Dr. Gary Clyde Hufbauer, Reginald Jones Senior Fellow of the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), gave a special lecture to the students on the topic of “The Economic Consequences of President Trump.” Dr. Hufbauer brought his insight about President Trump’s ambitious goals relevant to real GDP growth, job creations, and the US trade deficit. He also explained about the Korean trade barriers to the US exports such as technical barriers to trade, services and investment barriers. At the end of the session, Dr. Hufbauer also answered many questions from the participating students about how other countries should respond to new fiscal and trade policy plans by the Trump Administration.

Challenges to the Rule-Based International Order: Opportunities for ROIK-Australia CooperationOn April 13th, 2017, Gordon Flake, the founding CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre, gave a special lecture on “Challenges to the Rule-Based International Order: Opportunities for ROK-Australia Cooperation.” Explaining the importance of the liberal world order to countries like Korea and Australia, he highlighted the need for like-minded countries with shared interests and share values to work closely to reinforce the standards, norms and institutions which sustain that order. At the end of the session, he also answered several questions from the participating students about the possibility of ROK-Australia cooperation in terms of North Korea issue and the potential of the MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia).

Asia and the World Series: Transformation of East Asia and Korean DiplomacyOn April 10th, 2017, Young-sun Ha, Chairman of East Asia Institute, gave a lecture to the students in the Asia and the World about “Transformation of East Asia and Korean Diplomacy.” Chairman Ha gave a presentation on the current relationships among the East Asian countries based on 7 major factors; the relationship between the United States and China, North Korea’s nuclear program, the issue of THAAD, South Korea-U.S.-Japan network, Asia-Pacific economic discipline, alliance defense costs, and an operating system for the Asia-Pacific Region. At the end of the session, he also answered the questions from the participating students about the effectiveness of the conferences among countries and the complex politics.
