  • Prof. Jung Ho JEONG awarded the fall-2017 SNU Educational Award

    Prof. Jung Ho JEONG was awarded the 2017 SNU Educational Award for the fall semester. The‘SNU Educational Award’ is awarded to ten(10) professors each semester, who are selected by students, colleagues and members of the university for the quality of their lecturing, student guidance and other educational activities.  Prof. Jeong, Jung Ho was especially recognized for his contribution to SNU’s International Education. Responsible for initiating, designing and operating the‘SNU in the World’ Program, Prof. Jeong greatly developed the university’s global perspective. Upon receiving the award, Prof. Jeong donated half of the prize money to GSIS to support future education and business research programs. Finally, the professor hopes that the award encourages further development of new and existing GSIS programs.

  • CNAS-GSIS Dialogue: Next Generation National Security Leaders

    On November 13, 2017, SNU GSIS was pleased to welcome 22 Next Generation National Security Leaders from Washington, DC, US, visiting on behalf of the CNAS (Center for a New American Century), sponsored by Korea Foundation (KF). Headed by Dr. Patrick M. Cronin, Senior Advisor and Director at CNAS, the visiting members were composed of incumbent researchers, government officials, journalists, and experts based in Washington DC, specializing on East Asian regional affairs. Our Dean, Professor Cheol-Hee Park, Professor Seong-ho Sheen, and Professor Jae Ho Chung at Dept of Polisci & IR gave 10-15 minutes talking points on contemporary Korea-Japan, Korea-US, and Korea-China issues, followed up by open Q&A and discussion from the floor.

  • China's Rise as a Global Security, Technology and Innovation Power

    On November 8th, 2017, Tai Ming Cheung, director of the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) gave a special lecture on “China’s Rise as a Global Security, Technology and Innovation Power: Xi Jinping’s Grand Vision”. In the lecture, Dr. Cheung examined the interplay between key drivers of Chinese strategy – technology, innovation, and military power - and how it will shape the future nature of Chinese power.

  • The 3rd Model African Union Conference held at Sochun Hall

    Korea-Africa Center, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SNU, GSIS have co-hosted the 3rd Model African Union Conference at GSIS SNU on November 3rd and 4th. This event was organized by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sponsored by Africa Union, African Embassies in Seoul and Howard University, and was hosted aiming students to become future Africa experts. This year’s agenda was “Sustainable and Innovative Human Resource Procurement for AU Agenda 2063.” Il Su KIM, the President of Korea-Africa Center emphasized the importance of the agenda Human Resource considering the economic relationship between Africa and South Korea in the Opening remarks. Director Yong Min PARK of Africa, Middle East Division in Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dean Cheol Hee PARK of GSIS, SNU have delivered welcoming remarks, followed by congratulatory speeches of H.E. Mohamed Gello, ambassador of Kenya and  H.E. Chafik Rachadi, ambassador of Morocco. Nineteen (19) Master’s students from African countries, Algeria, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, South Sudan, Zimbabwe in the Development Cooperation Policy Program(DCPP) of SNU GSIS have participated as observers  and shared their opinions with other participants about the agenda. The Foreign Minister’s Award was granted to the representative of Ethiopia and the awardees were given the opportunity to visit headquarter of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

  • The 18th Research Paper Competition on the Trade Remedy System

    On November 3rd, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the International Society of Fair Trade (ISFT) held the 18th Research Paper Competition on the Trade Remedy System at the Trade Center of Korea International Trade Association (KITA). Many professors, specialists and students attended the competition – where selected undergraduate and graduate students presented their papers. Fourteen teams from nine different universities applied, and Min Gyu Kang and Na Yung Kim, a team from the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) at Seoul National University, won the 1st price.

  • Emeritus Professor Tae-ho Bark, Certificate of Contribution Presenting Ceremony

    On October 30th, the Graduate School of International Studies held a ceremony to recognize Professor Tae-ho Park with a Certificate of Contribution to the school. Professor Bark retired this past August, after 20 years of service to GSIS.  Dean Cheol-hee Park presented the Certificate of Contribution with gratitude and respect, along with a special gift on behalf of the professors of the Graduate School of International Studies. In return, Emeritus Professor Tae-ho Bark expressed his thanks and offered sage advice to the professors and staff.  Emeritus Professor Tae-ho Bark began his professorship at Seoul National University in 1997 and dedicated himself to education, not only through his research and lectures, but by serving as Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies and as Dean of the Office of International Studies. Previously the South Korean government’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy, Professor Tae-ho Bark was a distinct member of faculty and greatly contributed towards the school’s budding reputation as a leading institution.

  • The 4th FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series

    On October 31st 2017, the 4th FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series was held at SNU GSIS (GL Room). Professor Dukguen Ahn delivered a lecture to the FTA Commerce and Strategy program students about “The Issues and Status of the International Trade System.” Professor Ahn mainly discussed the challenges of the NAFTA and KORUS FTA renegotiations. He also responded to multiple questions by the students, particularly concerning the prospective approach of the South Korean government under the current circumstances.

  • Campus Asia Field Trip to Busan

    On October 27, 2017, Campus Asia students went on a two-day field  trip to Busan, the second largest city and the largest port in South Korea. The students visited numerous tourist sites, including Taejongdae, Haeundae Beach, Busan Aquarium, Yong-Gung Temple, and Gamcheon Art Village. They also tried Korean hweh (raw fish), famous Busan delicacy.  Students spent a memorable timegetting to know each other, discussing their experiences with Campus Asia program as well as their views on the cultural differences between China, Japan, and Korea. Through this field trip, Campus Asia students got to know more about Korea and its rich culture.

  • Asia and the World Series: Special Lecture by Dr. Hahm, Chaibong

    On October 30, 2017, Dr. Chaibong HAHM, president of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, gave a special lecture on “The Origins of the Liberal International Order in Northeast Asia and the New Cold War.” In the lecture, he argued that the historic window of opportunity for economic development and regional integration that Northeast Asia has enjoyed for the past 50 years is closing. Highlighting the importance of the liberal international order in Northeast Asia in the past,  he urged audience members to question what made that liberal order possible in the first place.  After reviewing the ways in which the international order is being presently undermined, Dr. Hahm spoke of the importance of, and methods for, its preservation.

  • Commencement of International Security Strategy Program

    On October 26, 2017, the International Security Strategy Program of the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) held a commencement for 37 executive students from the Ministry of National Defense and other related public and private organizations. During the event, Dean of GSIS, PARK, Cheol-Hee and the alumni president, Mr. HWANG, Jong Young, gave congratulatory remarks. The faculty of ISSP, associate dean, AHN, Dukgeun and Professor SHEEN, Seongho participated and congratulated the ISSP graduates for the efforts during last 15 weeks of the program. The graduates established an alumni association with Mr. MA, Myungwook serving as the second president of the association.  The ISSP is an executive program specializing in international security studies and encompasses conventional military security as well as contemporary human security issues. The program is expected to continue meeting the demands of policy cycles and will continue to produce experts of international security studies. The admission process for next year’s program is expected to begin on May of next year.
