  • Campus Asia Field Trip to Seoul

    On September 26th, Campus Asia students joined in the one-day Seoul Tour. They first visited the National Museum of Korea. The museum displayed various artifacts from the Paleolithic period to the Great Korean Empire, with elaborate explanations of each historical phase such as Unification of Shilla, Japanese colonization and etc. The students also enjoyed cultural artworks of Korea such as woodworks, Buddhist paintings and more. Then, the students visited Namsangol Hanok Village to experience traditional Korean culture including Hanbok fitting, falconry hunting, and archery making. For the finale, they visited Namsan Tower and enjoyed the scenery of entire Seoul along with local Korean cuisine.

  • The 40th International Development Policy Seminar

    The 40th International Development Policy Seminar was held on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 in the Global Leaders Room. The lecture entitled The Strategy for Korea’s Economic Success” was presented by Professor Hwy-Chang Moon, an emeritus professor of international business strategy who taught at SNU GSIS. The lecture was attended by the 10th and 11th batch of DCPP Students, Professor Chong-Sup Kim, and seven graduate students. The seminar dealt with the ABCD model of economic development. Throughout the seminar and the Q&A session held afterwards, students had the opportunity to reflect on their respective countries’ economic development.

  • The 37th GLP Commencement

    The 37th Seoul National University Global Leadership Program (hereafter "GLP") concluded with a graduation ceremony on August 30th, 2018. The 37th GLP cohort was composed of 39 professionals from diverse backgrounds. The professionals were composed of corporate managers from diverse industries, conglomerates such as Samsung, Posco, and public enterprises including Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea Land and Housing Corporation and more. The 37th GLP members attended a total of 22 lectures starting from “Strategy for Korea’s Economic Success” by Professor Hwy-Chang Moon, given over a period of six months were composed of practical academic courses, international area studies courses, and cultural understanding courses to provide a multidimensional perspective on the modern business environment.   • Turnover and Inauguration Ceremony for Dean of GSIS

    On 3rd of September, there was a ceremony for the turnover and inauguration for dean of GSIS. The former Dean, Professor Cheol-Hee Park welcomed the new Dean, Jong-Ho Jeong. The ceremony was attended by fellow deans of professional graduate schools in SNU, faculty, staff members and students. During his speech, Dean Jong-Ho Jeong thanked every member of GSIS for their contribution and pledged to work for their benefit. Upon presentation of a bouquet of flowers by the student council members, the former Dean Cheol-Hee Park awarded a plaque to Dean Jong-Ho Jeong to congratulate him in his inauguration.

  • The 40th Commencement of SNU GSIS

    The 40th Commencement of SNU GSIS was held on August 29th, 2018 at Socheon Hall. The graduates were composed of sixty-nine Masters in International Studies and four Doctors of Philosophy in International Studies. Professor Cheolhee Park, Dean of SNU GSIS, extended his congratulations to the graduates on successfully completing their degrees and urging graduates to stay informed and active in their respective fields. The valedictorian speech was given by Sukeui Sohn, who graduated as the valedictorian among the Doctors of Philosophy in International Studies.

  • Professor Moon, Hwy-Chang's Retirement Lecture

    “Only when you have thoroughly understood the subject matter, you can make a good solution, and to make a better solution, you must not consider just one side of thinking but both the East and the West and converge the strengths of each,” said Professor Hwy-Chang Moon in his farewell lecture, addressing how academic progress and practical application can be achieved effectively.   On June 4, special guests and students gathered in Socheon Hall to commemorate Professor Moon’s career as a scholar and educator and to congratulate his recent acceptance of SNU Academic Research Award. Followed by the opening remarks by Dean Cheol-hee Park, Professor Young-Hae Han, Dr. Yeon Woo Lee, and Mr. Ted Hyun Moon shared special messages to Professor Moon, relating their memories of Professor Moon as a colleague, mentor, and father.   Professor Moon delivered his farewell lecture titled, “International Studies: Advancing beyond Western Theories.” The lecture encapsulated the key findings from his decades of scholarly works and advice for the future generation, gifting the attendees with wisdom and insight.   Throughout the ceremony, Socheon Hall was filled with expressions of gratitude and love, showing “what a warm person Professor Moon had been to people around him and students,” to quote his colleague, Professor Jiyeoun Song’s words. GSIS will miss his intelligence and warmth.

  • [EU Centre] EU and Northeast Asia: Three partners, Two headaches, One strategy - Professor Ramon Pacheco Pardo

    A special lecture entitled “EU and Northeast Asia: three partners, two headaches, one strategy” was held at GL Room, GSIS, on Wednesday, May 30, 2018. Supported by EU Centre, GSIS, the lecture was presented by Prof. Dr. Ramon Pacheco Pardo, a KF-VUB Korea Chair, Institute for European Studies, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, as well as a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at King’s College London. The lecture enlightened the students on the relationship between Northeast Asia and EU, specifically in the topic related to strategies that the EU have for engaging with the Asian region, looking towards the direct threats that are posed by China and North Korea on EU as well as its partners in the area. The KF-VUB Korea Chair (www.korea-chair.eu) at the Institute for European Studies (www.ies.be) is the primary contact point in Europe on policy issues related to Korea and the Korean Peninsula. A joint initiative between the Korea Foundation and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the Chair plays a strategic role in furthering Europe-Korea relations. It builds links between Europe and Korea through a number of activities and partnerships, and contributes actively to increasing the possibilities for their future cooperation on bilateral, regional, and global levels.

  • [Asia and the World] Cooperation and/or Cooperation? - Dean Takahara, Akio

    The fourth distinguished lecture of the “Asia and the World” public lecture series for 2018 was held on May 24th in GL Room. Supported by Toyota Motor Korea, the lecture entitled “Cooperation and/or Competition?: Conflicting Trends in East Asia” was presented by Professor Akio Takahara, Dean of the Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Tokyo. Throughout the lecture, Professor Akio Takahara discussed the topics of globalization, regionalization and stumbling blocks in East Asia as a well-known scholar in the field of contemporary Chinese politics and international relations. Professor Akio Takahara emphasized the importance of global and regional networks in bringing about stability in East Asia. The lecture was followed by an active Q&A session and it ended with the presentation of an appreciation plaque and a photo session.

  • 21st GSIS Day Alumni Night

    On May 30th, 2018, SNU GSIS celebrated its 21st birthday. On GSIS Day, professors, alumni and current students joined together for various activities. After a speech by the dean and several professors, everyone joined for some “episode sharing.” Alumni and students shared their, often funny, thoughts about GSIS, CNN Café, the 5511 Bus and other things linked to the school.   The students and alumni also had a chance to participate in some networking activities. Strengthening GSIS ties, they discussed everything, ranging from the best and worst courses at GSIS, to writing a thesis and getting a job. We hope we will continue to celebrate GSIS’ birthday every year, strengthening ties with the alumni and creating a strong, warm GSIS community.
