Korean Studies as Soft Power in the United States: Past, Present, and Future

On February 17th, Professor Eugene Y. Park from the Univ. of Pennsylvania, also the director of James Joo-Jin Kim Program in the Korean Studies, gave a special lecture on the topic of “Korean Studies as Soft Power in the United States: Past, Present, and Future”. Professor Park, Tae Gyun from GSIS was the moderator, Zheng Jiyong, the director of the Center for Korean Studies at Fudan University, and Prof. Sem Vermeersch from the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies at SNU took the role as the commentators.  The purpose of the seminar was to discuss the development and standing of Korean Studies in academia and the world from various perspectives.

2017 Spring Quarter Info Session for incoming students

 On February 15, 2017, GSIS Student Council hosted the 2017 Spring Quarter Info Session for incoming graduate students. Student Council President, Beomcheol Lee, and Treasurer, Tim Rolfes, gave a presentation on course registration, graduation requirements, and other aspects of student life before fielding questions from the students. Students were divided by major for group discussions led by major representatives from the student council. Major representatives went over possible concerns for new students and gave advice on topics ranging from course planning to nearby lunch options.  Buoyed by the support of the student council, the new students eagerly anticipate the start of their time at SNU GSIS.

2016 Completion Ceremony of the DCPP of GSIS, SNU

The 8th Commencement Ceremony of DCPP (Development Cooperation Policy Program), GSIS was held on December 14, 2016 at International Conference Hall.  With the support of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) of Seoul National University has produced 12 graduates. The GSIS DCPP students from developing countries are trained to become competitive leaders in their respective country. Most of the graduates of DCPP have returned to their job as government officers. The 9th DCPP will be starting in coming September.

The Prospect and Development of Global FTA System

On December 19, 2016, FTA Commerce and Strategy Program hosted the 2016 GSIS FTA Commerce & Strategy Academic Conference for Young Scholars by inviting 7 experts to give a presentation under the topic, “the Prospect and Development of Global FTA System.”  Session I invited Dr. Hyo-young Lee from Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), Dr. Minjung Kim from KDI School of Public Policy and Dr. Wonkyu Shin from Korea Development Institute (KDI). In order to wrap up Session I, 4 presenters from Session II gave some comments about the given presentations.  Session II continued with the 4 senior researchers from Center for International Commece & Strategy of GSIS, SNU. They were Dongchul Kwak, Jiyoung Yoo, Jeongjoon Park, and Kyounghwa Kim. Just like Session I, Session II wrap up was led by 3 presenters from Session I.

On November 18th, the 3rd National Essay Competition of FTA Business Program was held at Pukyong National University. About 130 professors, specialists and students from the seven program-running universities (Chosun University, Chungnam National University, Inha University, Kyungpook National University, Pukyong National University, Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan University) attended the event, where selected graduate students competed with their papers and presentations. The 17th Essay Competition on Trade Remedy System

On November 11th, the International Society of Fair Trade (ISFT) held the 17th Essay Competition on Trade Remedy System at the Trade Center of Korea International Trade Association (KITA). Many professors, specialists and students attended the competition, where selected undergraduate and graduate students presented their papers. Fifteen students from six teams presented and Cherry Kim, Hyerim Kim and Gaegoung Kim, a team from the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), Seoul National University, won the 1st place.

The 1st TBT Essay Competition

 On December 20th, the 1st TBT Essay Competition was held at the Inter Continental Seoul COEX. A total number of five qualified teams – both undergraduates and graduates – competed with their papers and presentations on the TBT issues of international commerce. Sejin Hong and Sungshin Lee (team), and Nayung Kim(individual) both from Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), Seoul National University won the 1st and 2nd prize respectively.

KAIDEC 2016 Annual Academic Conference. Research Paper Contest.

On December 9th, Korea Association of International Development and Cooperation (KAIDEC) 2016 Annual Academic Conference took place at the Korea Institute of Public Administration (KIPA). A total of approximately 250 professors, specialists and students attended the conference, where selected graduate students presented their papers submitted for screening in the graduate student research paper contest. Eleven teams from seven different universities (Seoul National University, Korea University, KDI, Kyung Hee University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Soongsil University, Pusan National University) participated in the presentation. Yehrhee SHIM and Bo Kyung KIM, a team from GSIS Seoul National University, were announced as 2nd place to win the excellence prize.

FTA Trade Policy Symposium: Crisis and Policy Initiatives of the World Trade System

On November 25th, 2016, SNU GSIS was pleased to host the FTA Trade Policy Symposium by inviting 12 trade experts to debate under the topic, “Crisis and Policy Initiatives of the World Trade System.”  Session I began with the overview of the sub-topic, “Crisis and Problem of the World Trade System” by Dukgeun Ahn, a professor of GSIS, Seoul National University and a moderator of Session I. After that, the debate about the given sub-topic was further discussed by 5 other panelists: Taeho Bark, a former trade minister and a professor of GSIS, Seoul National University, Se Young Ahn, a professor of GSIS, Sogang University, Jaemin Lee, a professor of School of Law, Seoul National University, Byung-Rin Yoo, a visiting professor of College of Life and Science, Kyungpook National University, and Seokyoung Choi, a visiting professor of GSIS, Seoul National University. Panelists mainly talked about the challenges of the WTO system, the role of G20 and the other multilateral trading systems. Session II was followed with the overview of the sub-topic, “Trade Policy Initiatives of the Korean Government” by Yoon Heo, the Dean and a professor of GSIS, Sogang University and a moderator of Session II. Then, the debate about the given sub-topic was continuously discussed by another panel: Jong-Hoon Kim, a former trade minister, Byung-il Choi, a professor of Ewha Womans University, Inkyo Cheong, a professor of Inha University, Jeong-Bin Im, a professor of College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Seoul National University, and Chul Chung, a visiting professor of GSIS, Seoul National University. The panel mainly talked about the current issues and direction of trade policy, and the strategy to enhance trade negotiating capacity.

The 30th Int. Development Policy Seminar: Sustainable Development and Environment

  On November 24th, Professor Tae-Yong Jung from Yonsei University visited to give a special lecture on "Sustainable Development & Environmental Policy" as a 30th International Development Policy Seminar. The main purpose of this seminar was to discuss about sustainable long-term environmental policies from diverse perspectives. He strongly delivered the message that in order for all of us to improve our economic conditions in a long-term, it is absolutely necessary to carefully consider the importance of protecting environment. In other words, it is our responsibilities to further take in charge to establish sustainable environmental policy.  Nonetheless, he also emphasized that mere protective measure is not appropriate rather we need more active measure to address environmental issues.
