The 4th CHAMP CommencementChina Advanced Management Program (CHAMP) of Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University launched its fourth batch from September 13th 2017 to February 21st 2018. Acknowledging the importance of re-establishing the notion of Korean leaders about China, CHAMP has created its systemic and comprehensive curriculum on Chinese economy, business, politics, foreign affairs, history and culture. Especially at the end of January, CHAMP participants went on a field trip to Wuhan and Changsha, the express rail intersection as well as the core region for expanding Chinese domestic demand. During the trip, extensive talks were held between legal representatives of Chinese local branches on Chinese food culture, expanding Chinese business opportunities while deepening the effective mutual cooperation with Chinese people. The 36th GLP CommencementThe 36th Seoul National University Global Leadership Program (hereafter "GLP") concluded with a graduation ceremony on February 22nd, 2018. The 36th GLP cohort was composed of 37 professionals from diverse backgrounds. The professionals were composed of corporate managers from diverse industries, conglomerates such as Samsung, Lotte, Hanhwa, and public enterprises including Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea International Trade Association, Furla Korea and more. The 36th GLP members attended a total of 21 lectures, .given over a period of six months were composed of practical academic courses, international area studies courses, and cultural understanding courses to provide a multidimensional perspective on the modern business environment. BESETO DDMP-Final _PresentationOn February 11 of 2018, just after the Pyeongchang trip, BESETO students were to have a final presentation to wrap up their two-week program. Professor Jeong Jong-Ho, Professor Song Jiyeoun, and Professor Ahn Dukgeun gladly joined to hear the presentations. The first group presented about “Life as a Female in China, Korea, and Japan”. The presentation mainly illustrated the current existence of gender inequality in all three countries by comparing stats of women’s involvement in economy and those of men. The second group mainly focused on “a Comparative study on AIDS epidemic in China, Japan, and Korea”. Basically, the presentation mainly discussed about sexual education and the current situation of viral infections in all three countries. Lastly, the third group entitled their presentation as “Asian Fairytales” and mainly discussed 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics, 1998 Nagano winter Olympic, and upcoming 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic in Japan; 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics and 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics; and 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and impending 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The presentation was primarily about mascots, symbols, and the message of the athletic contests. BESETO students showed magnificent work just within 2 short weeks and the program was concluded successfully.

BESETO exchange students, Field Trip to PyeongChang Winter OlympicsFrom February 9 to 10 of 2018, BESETO exchange students went on their trip to Pyeongchang for the opening ceremony of 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and to spectate some of the Olympic Games held in the area, as well as observing the festival and the atmosphere in Gangwon Province. Students watched the freestyle skiing on the first day and the curling games on the second. They also joined the snow festival in Daegwanryeong area which was adjacent to the Pyeongchang stadium. During the dinner, students had barbeque in the cabin and watched the opening ceremony. BESETO students were extremely delighted to be a part of winter Olympics in 2018 Korea.

GSIS-KOICA DCPP Evaluation ConferenceOn February 12, 2018, the SNU GSIS-KOICA DCPP Evaluation Conference was held under the topic: “Effective Development Cooperation on Higher Education.” It was a rare event where both DCPP graduates and current students gathered to discuss about their experiences and how their experience at GSIS contributed to their current field of work. Professor Park Cheol-Hee, Dean of GSIS delivered the welcoming remarks and Professor Ahn Dukgeun, Associate Dean of GSIS presented a special lecture on the “Current issues in the World Trading System.” Two presentations from our DCPP alumni, Mr. Wiqar Ahmad and Mr. Jorge Miguel Castillo Castro were also delivered. A round table on the “Higher Education and Development Issues in Each Country” was conducted under Professor Byun Oung’s moderation and 3 of our 10th batch DCPP students (Mr. Kacou N’Douba Didier Simplice, Ms. Tetteh Pearl Naa Dedei, and Mr. Macha Raphael Heri) participated. Professor Jeong Hyeok, Director of DCPP delivered the closing remarks to conclude the event.

2018 Campus Asia Winter Program-BESETO DDMPFrom January 29th, the winter program of Campus Asia in GSIS, SNU started under the title of “Peace and PyeongChang”: Enhancing Peace and Cooperation in East Asia. In total, 11 students are participating in this program from Beijing, Tokyo and Seoul National University. This program will last until February 11th, and during this 2 weeks, 9 lectures are given by various professors from also Beijing, Tokyo and Seoul National University. The titles of lectures were: ‘Changing World order and the Korean Peninsula’ by Prof. Park, Cheol-Hee(SNU)/ ‘East Asia in the world trading system: Trade disputes and Agreements’ by Prof. Ahn, Dukgeun(SNU)/’East Asia’s Economic Miracle: Japan, South Korea and Taiwan’ and ‘Socio-Demographic Challenges in East Asia: Declining Fertility Rates, Aging and Migration’ by Prof. Song, Jiyeoun(SNU)/’US Maximum pressure strategy and its implications for North-East Asian security’ and ‘DPRK nuclear issue: Is there a way out?’ by Prof. Han, Hua(PKU)/’The changing regional order in East Asia’ by Prof. Kohara Masahiro(U Tokyo)/ ‘Peace and Sports’ by Prof. Kang, Joon-Ho(SNU)/ ‘The Role of Next Generation in Enhancing Peace of 21st East Asia’ by Prof. Sheen, Seong-Ho. On January 30th, started by the lunch and lecture given by Professor Park, Cheol-Hee, Dean of GSIS, SNU, students already taken 6 lectures and went to Jeonju for two-day field trip, and will attend 3 more lectures and going to enjoy the fantastic PyeongChang Winter Olympic on February 9th to 10th.

Campus Asia Field Trip to JeonjuStudents participating in the Campus Asia winter program had a great time visiting Jeonju for 2 days on February 1st and 2nd, where Korean tradition is still alive. In Jeonju, students had time to recall the past of Korea, centering on Han-ok Village. On the first day, students went to Han-ok Village to experience making Korean traditional crafts and natural soap while wearing traditional clothes of Korea. On the second day, students had time to learn traditional folk music and musical instruments and to explore Jeonju's traditional market. And of course, students could fully enjoy lots of Jeonju’s specialty foods such as Jeonju Bibimbap. Students surely felt the beauty of traditions in Korea during this two-day trip.

Campus Asia Students, Field Trip to Jeju IslandFrom December 20 to 22 of 2017, Campus Asia students went on their final three-day trip to Jeju Island. The students visited Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), Soesokkak Beach, Jeju Folk Village, Water Circus, K-Pop Museum, and The Ma Park. As one of the Korea’s most representative tour site, Jeju Island is filled with natural sites such as Seopji Koji or Mt. Hanla, as well as man-made entertainments such as Love Museum, Eco Land, and Jungmun Tour Area. The students were most attracted by the unique architectures of Jeju Folk Village as they showed distinction from ordinary Folk Village. Moreover, the Island was filled with nature that is incomparable to one in Seoul and indigenous food such as Jeju style noodle, Heukdoeji (Jeju Pork), and various seafood. Through the Jeju Island trip, students acquired deeper knowledge about Korea by exploring the area distant from the mainland Korea.

Around 100 professors, specialists and students from the seven program-running universities (Chosun University, Chungnam National University, Inha University, Kyungpook National University, Pukyong National University, Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan University) attended the event, where selected graduate students competed with their research papers and presentations. Min Gyu Kang from the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), Seoul National University, won the award.
