Professor Moon, Hwy-Chang Awarded the 2018 SNU Excellence in Research AwardProfessor Hwy-Chang Moon has received the Spring 2018 SNU Academic Research Award. This award is given to faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding capabilities in academic research. The prize is particularly meaningful to both Professor Moon and GSIS as it comes at a time when Professor Moon is retiring in August, 2018. Professor Moon was selected by the University for his contributions to academic achievements that extended the research in international business and competitiveness. Professor Moon developed a number of theories such as the Generalized Double Diamond Model, Imbalance Theory, and the ABCD Model by extending the mainstream Western theories of international business and competitiveness to include the Asian experiences of business strategy and economic development. He authored many articles and books, published by prestigious journals and publishers such as Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press. During the ceremony, he gave a speech to the faculty of the University to encourage continuing the spirit of quality research. Expressing his gratitude to the GSIS students, faculty and staff, he pledged to donate KRW 10,000,000 (half of the award prize) to GSIS as a development fund for education and research. To commemorate Professor Moon’s acceptance of the award, GSIS will be holding a special lecture on June 4, 2018. This special lecture is titled, “The Development of International Studies and Its Role: Advancing beyond Western Theories.” The event will also include a retirement ceremony for Professor Moon where GSIS families and friends are invited to join and express their gratitude and respect.

[SNU-CSIS] Conversation on Summit Diplomacies and UnificationCSIS-GSIS Seminar was held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Supported by GSIS and CSIS, the lecture entitled “Conversation on Summit Diplomacies and Unification” as presented by Dr. Victor Cha and his conversation with Prof. Park Cheol-Hee and Prof. Sheen Seong-Ho. Victor Cha is a senior adviser and the inaugural holder of the Korea Chair in CSIS. He also holds the D.S. Song-KF Professorship in Government and International Affairs at Georgetown University. Throughout the seminar, Victor Cha placed the reasons why North Korea is now interested in the conversations. Also, he along with our professors interpreted Inter-Korean Summit held on April, 27 and the East Asia situation nowadays.

[Campus Asia] Field Trip to BusanOn April 28th to 29th of 2018, Campus Asia students went on a two-day field trip to Busan, the second largest city and the largest port city in South Korea. The students visited many sites, including Taejongdae, Yong-Gung Temple, Haeundae Beach Nurimaru APEC House, Jagalchi Market, and Gukje (International) Market. Every one of these places has its own value. Especially, as international studies students, the student were able to visit the very same place where 2005 APEC Summit meeting was held and other places are the landmarks that visitors should see when visiting Busan. Moreover, they enjoyed famous Busan delicacies, such as hweh (raw fish) and various fish stews. During the evening session, students discussed about North-South Korea meeting, East Asia-U.S. relations, and discussion and suggestion on Campus Asia program with Professor Jeong Jong-ho, who gladly joined the trip to interact with the students in the program. Students also spent time together and had a chance of getting to know each other better. Students had one of the most memorable times in 2018 Spring semester Campus Asia Program activities.

[Asia and the World] New Era of Chinese Foreign Policy under the Xi AdministrationThe third Distinguished Lecture of the Asia and the World public sector series was held on Monday, April 23, 2018. Supported by Toyota Motor Korea, the lecture entitled “New Era of Chinese Foreign Policy under Xi Jinping Administration” was presented by ZHU Feng, the Executive Director of China Center for Collaborative Studies of the South China Sea at Ninjing University, as well as, the Director of the Institute of International Studies at Ninjing University. Throughout the lecture, Mr. ZHU Feng thoroughly explained the "new era" of Chinese foreign policy, which has practically begun since the 19th Party Congress. In addition, throwing and answering several important questions related to recent Chinese foreign policies, He maintained that What China wants is to keep up with the changing world.

[Asia and the World] ROK - US Alliance: Challenges and ResponsesThe second Distinguished Lecture of the Asia and the World public sector series was held on Monday, April 9, 2018. Supported by Toyota Motor Korea, the lecture entitled “ROK-U.S. Alliance: Challenges and Reponses” was presented by Ahn Ho-young, an ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the USA (2013-2017). Throughout the lecture, Mr. Ahn highlighted the importance of the security alliance between the Republic of Korea and the US, which started in 1953. According to Mr. Ahn, since 1953, the mutual security treaty has helped the two countries to get over the challenges, has adapted itself to the new set of issues and continued to be appreciated even more in both countries.

Campus Asia Seoul TourOn April 1st, 2018, Campus Asia students joined in the one-day Seoul Tour. They first visited National Museum of Korean Contemporary History. The Museum displayed many artifacts from Japanese Occupation era to Modern Korea with elaborate explanations of each historical phases such as Korean War, Miracle of Han River, hosting of 1988 Seoul Olympics and 2002 World Cup, etc. Then, the students visited Chadeokgung Palace to view the face of the later stage of Choseon and take a walk in trails inside the walls. Moreover, they watched the collaboration of Korean traditional musical performance, Pansori, in the plot of ancient Chinese literature - Romance of the Three Kingdoms - in Chongdong Theatre. The title of the performance was which is one of the most famous war scene in the fiction. For the finale, the tour was concluded with traditional Korean local cuisine, Hanjungsik, in Myeongdong.

Asia and the World Series: Peace on the Korean Peninsula in a Changing International OrderThe first Distinguished Lecture of the Asia and the World public lecture series for the year of 2018 was held on Monday, March 26, 2018 in Socheon Hall. Supported by Toyota Motor Korea, the lecture entitled “Peace on the Korean Peninsula in a Changing International Order” was presented by Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations. Throughout the lecture, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon discussed the topic of how to secure peace on the Korean peninsula and shared his experiences as a diplomat, a foreign minister, a Secretary-General of the United Nations, and as a Korean citizen. Mr. Ban Ki-Moon emphasized the importance of global citizenship and encouraged the students to become global leaders who make a difference in the world. The lecture was followed by a Q&A session and it ended with the presentation of an appreciation plaque and photo sessions.

The 37th International Development Policy SeminarThe 37th International Development Policy Seminar was held on Thursday, March 22, 2018 in the International Conference Hall. The lecture entitled “Understanding Korean ODA: Trends and Challenges” was presented by Professor Hyuk-Sang Sohn, the Dean of the Graduate School of Public Policy and Civic Engagement, Kyung Hee University. The lecture was attended by the 10th batch of DCPP Students, Professor Hyeok Jeong, and four graduate students from various departments. The seminar dealt with the development of Korean ODA and its characteristics. Throughout the seminar and the Q&A session held afterwards, students had the opportunity to reflect on their respective countries’ ODA and interactions with Korean institutions.

Issues and Perspectives Seminar: Double Jeopardy for Korea after PyeongchangOn March 19th, 2018, was held under the topic “Double Jeopardy for Korea after Pyeongchang.” Sponsored by Toyota Motor Korea, the Issues and Perspectives Seminar series are put on by SNU GSIS in order to discuss timely policy issues. This time, the seminar was designed to discuss two major risks facing the korean peninsula after Pyeongchang Winter Olympics – North Korea and trade issues. The seminar was attended not only by GSIS students, but also by those from embassies in Seoul and media who are interested in the topic.

The 39th Commencement of GSIS, SNUThe 39th Commencement of the Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University (hereafter “GSIS”) was held on February 26th, 2018 at the Socheon Convention Hall. The graduates included fifty seven Masters in International Studies and two Ph.D. students in International Studies. Professor Cheol Hee Park, dean of GSIS, extended his congratulations to the graduates on successfully completing their degrees. Professor Emeritus Tae-Ho Bark gave a congratulatory speech, urging the graduates to stay informed and active in their respective fields. The valedictorian speech was given by Woosik Yu, who graduated as the valedictorian of International Commerce.
