Dear all,

The SNU GSIS BK21 Program is hosting the GSIS BK21 Workshop 50th on Friday, May 29. At this workshop, two MA students will present their research findings based on the work they shared earlier this year at the Joint Workshop with Kyushu University’s CSPA, held in February as part of the BK21 Program’s academic activities. This session is open to all SNU GSIS students, but attendance is mandatory for BK fellows. (Please note that attendance and active participation will be taken into consideration during the selection process for next semester’s BK fellows) If you plan to attend, please register through the Google Form below:

She will deliver a lecture on the theme of “The Strategic Firm and the Sustainability Challenge : Evasion, Compliance, and Alignment.”

Abstract: Firms respond to sustainability pressures in ways that are far more strategic than policy and theory often assume. Drawing on a program of empirical research, this lecture examines when and why institutional pressures produce their intended environmental outcomes, and when they do not. The first part shows that firms systematically evade institutional pressures, displacing environmental harm in ways that are often invisible to policymakers. The second part identifies conditions under which sustainability goals are achieved — through well-designed regulation that aligns incentives, and through private incentives such as commercial interest, worker health, and market demand that happen to point in the same direction. Together, the findings suggest that what determines environmental outcomes is not the existence of institutional pressure, but whether that pressure aligns with the incentives firms already face.
