Q) I searched for courses under the Graduate School of International Studies on the course registration website, but I either see no courses or only a few. What should I do?

A) Please make sure to set the 'Department' filter to Graduate School of International Studies only, and leave all other filters empty or set to 'ALL' before searching again. Please see below.

Q) Is it possible for exchange students to take courses that are designated only for Full-time GSIS students (GSIS Only courses)?

A) GSIS Required courses are intended exclusively for full-time GSIS students.

However, if an exchange student wishes to take one of these courses, they may submit a Quota Exceeding Course Registration Request.

Please note that enrollment is only possible with the instructor’s explicit approval.

If an exchange student registers for a GSIS-only course without submitting a quota exceeding request during the regular course registration period, the registration will be automatically canceled after notification via email.

A) 국제대학원 전공 필수 과목은 국제대학원 Full Time 학생만을 대상으로 합니다. 그럼에도 교환학생이 수강을 희망할 경우 정원외신청을 진행하여주시기 바랍니다. 이는 담당 교수님의 승인이 있어야만 수강이 가능한 점 참고 바랍니다. 

교환학생이 정원외신청을 하지않고 정규 수강신청 기간에 수강신청한 경우 이메일로 통보 후 자동수강취소 됩니다.

Q) 연구생이 뭔가요?

대학원 과정을 수료한 자 중 이번 학기에 학교 제반시설(도서관, 실험실습실, 전산원, 대학원연구실, 관악사 등)을 이용하거나 학위논문을 제출하고자 하여 연구생 등록을 한 자를 의미합니다.

Q) 수료 후 연구생 등록이 필수인가요?

아뇨, 필수는 아닙니다. 다만, 해당 학기 학위논문을 제출하고자 하면 필수로 등록하셔야 합니다.

Q). 등록금은 얼마인가요?

150,000원입니다.

Q) What is a Research Student?

A Research Student refers to a student who has completed their coursework and has registered as a Research Student in order to use school facilities (library, laboratories, computer labs, dormotories, etc) or submit their thesis.

Q) Is is mandatory to register as a Research Student after competing the coursework?

No, it is not mandatory. However, you must register as a research student in the semester you wish to submit your thesis.

Q) How much is the fee?

It is KRW 150,000.

* 논문제출자격시험 요건 합격 여부와 무관함

1. 수료: 수료 요건을 채웠고, 앞으로 수업 수강할 계획이 없음

- 수료 후 논문심사를 받기 위해서는 논문심사 받는 학기에 반드시 연구생 등록을 해야 함

- 수료 후 수강신청 금지

- 수료하는 학기의 학위수여식 일자에 학적 상태가 "수료"로 변경

2. 미수료: 수료 요건을 채우지 못하여 다음 학기에 반드시 수업을 수강해야 함

저절로 되지 않습니다. 수료 요건을 충족하는 학생들을 대상으로 매 학기 말에 수료 여부를 확인합니다.

Completion of Coursework Requirement

- MA: Enrolled for at least 4 semesters and earned the minimum credits for graduation (enrolled before 2018: 45 credits / enrolled between 2019~2023: 39 credits / enrolled after 2024: 30 credits)

- PhD: Enrolled for at least 4 semesters and earned at least 45 credits

* Whether or not the student has passed the TQE is not relevant

1. Completion of Coursework: student has fulfilled all completion requirements and does not plan to take any more courses

- Student must register as a Research Student in the semester you are willing to do your Thesis Defense

- Course registration is not allowed

- Academic status will be changed to "Completion of Coursework" on the date of Commencement ceremony

2. Incompletion of Coursework: student has failed to fulfill the completion requirement courses and must register for courses in the following semester

3. Postponement of Completion: student has fulfilled all completion requirements but is willing to take courses in the following semester

- Student must register for at least 1 credit in the following semester. Failure to do so will result in expulsion

No, it does not. At the end of each semester the office will be checking the completion status of students who meet the requirements.

- If you are changing your English name, you must attach your passport

Q) 입학 때 영어 성적을 제출했는데 논자시 요건으로 인정되나요?

A) 일반전형(정시)로 입학했을 때 TEPS/TOEFL을 제출했고, 그 성적이 졸업기준을 충족하면 자동인정됩니다.

외국인전형(글로벌인재 등)으로 입학했거나 입학 때 영어 성적 제출이 면제되었으면 인정되지 않고, 행정실로 서류를 제출하셔야 합니다.

상기 이유로 영어 성적이 있으나 입시 과정을 통해 인정받지 않은 경우 입학 직후에 제출하시기를 추천드립니다. (제출일로부터 2년 이내에 취득한 성적만 인정)

Q) I submitted English Scores when I was admitted. It is still valid for my TQE requirement?

A) If you were admitted through the Regular Admissions(Koreans) and submitted TEPS/TOEFL score which meets the graduation requirement, it is automatically recognized.

However, if you were admitted through International Admissions(Foreigners) or were exempt from submitting English scores at the time of admission, your scores will not be recognized automatically. In that case, you will need to submit the relevant documents to the administration office again to get your scores recognized.

For the reasons stated above if you have valid English test scores which were not recognized during the admission process, it is recommended that you submit them as soon as possible after enrollment (only scores obtained within 2 years from the date of submission will be accepted)

Q) 졸업유예 가능한가요?

가능하지 않습니다. 논문 디펜스하는 학기에 바로 졸업하셔야 합니다.

Q) Can I postpone my graduation?

No it is not allowed. You have to graduate in the semester you defend your thesis.

Q) 조기 졸업 가능한가요?

가능하지 않습니다. 4학기 재학 후 졸업 가능합니다 (DCPP 학생 제외)

Q) Is early graduation accepted?

No it is not allowed. You have to register for at least 4 semesters to graduate (except DCPP students)

Q) 언제까지 논문을 제출해야 하나요?

- 석사: 수료 후 4년 이내

- 박사: 수료 후 6년 이내

Q) 학위논문 제출기한 내에 제출을 못 했어요

만약 이 기간 내에 제출을 못 할시 학위논문제출기한 2년 연장 신청을 할 수 있습니다.

* 신청 시점부터 2년 연장이 아닌 석사 4년 끝나는 시점에서 2년, 박사 끝나는 시점에서 2년 연장입니다.

ex) 2021.8 석사 수료 > 2025.8 논문제출기한 마감 > 언제 연장 신청을 하던 2027.8까지 연장 가능

Q) 학위논문제출기한 2년 연장했는데도 제출을 못 했어요

2년 연장 후에도 학위논문 제출을 하지 못하였으면 초과자연구생 신청을 할 수 있으며, 신청 시점으로부터 3년의 기간이 부여됩니다.

초과자 연구생 신청 시기는 제한이 없습니다.

초과자 연구생은 석사는 1개 학기 등록 및 6학점 이상 이수, 박사는 2개 학기 등록 및 9학점 이상 이수하셔야 합니다.

초과자 연구생은 마지막 기회이며, 초과자 연구생 3년이 지나면 논문 제출을 위한 기회가 더 이상 없기 때문에 수업을 수강할 수 있는지, 3년 이내에 논문 제출이 가능한지 충분히 고민하고 신청하시기 바랍니다.

* 논문제출기한연장과 초과자연구생은 매 학기 방학 기간에 공지가 올라오니 주기적으로 공지사항 확인해서 명시된 기한 내에 신청하셔야 합니다(상시 신청 X)

* 병역의무이행 기간과 임신·출산 기간(임신·출산의 경우 1회당 1년), 육아기간(1자녀당 2년)은 학위논문제출기한에 산입하지 않으며 위 사실을 객관적으로 증명할 수 있는 서류를 제출해야 함

Q) Until when do I have to submit my thesis?

- MA: Within 4 years of your Completion of Coursework

- Ph.D.: Within 6 years of your Completion of Coursework

Q) I wasn't able to submit within the time period

If you do not submit your thesis within this period, you can apply for a 2 year Extension of Thesis Submission Period.

* The 2-year extension is not counted from the application date, but from the deadline of your thesis submission deadline

ex). MA Completion of Coursework in Aug 2021 > Deadline of thesis submission Aug 2025 > Able to extend until Aug 2027, no matter when you apply

Q) I wasn't able to submit even after the 2-year Extension

If the thesis is still not submitted after the 2-year Extension, you can apply to be a Final Research Student, and will be given a 3-year deadline starting from the application date.

There are no restrictions on when you can apply to be a Final Research Student.

MA students have to register for one semester and complete at least 6 credits, and Ph.D. students have to register for two semesters and complete at least 9 credits.

Final Research Student is your final opprtunity for thesis submission. Once this 3-year period has passed, there will be no further chance to submit the thesis. Please carefully consider whether you can attend the classes and submit your thesis within the 3 years.

* The notice for the 2-year Extension and Final Research Student Application is announced during the holiday of each semester, so you need to check the notice regularly and apply during the designated time (Application not accepted any time throughout the year)

* Period of Military Service Obligations, Pregnancy and childbrith(1 year per child), and childcare(2 years per child) are not included in the thesis submission deadlie. You must submit documents to prove these facts.

Q) 언제까지 논문제출자격시험 요건(전공, 영어, 제2외국어)을 충족해야 하나요?

논문 디펜스 신청 시점까지 모든 요건이 충족되어야 합니다. 하나라도 요건이 충족되지 않으면 디펜스 신청 자체가 불가능합니다. 1학기는 대략 4월 초, 2학기는 대략 10월 초입니다. 디펜스 신청 예정 학기에 언어 수업을 수강하면 신청 시점에 성적이 없기 때문에 신청 불가능합니다.

[박사]

논문 프로포절 신청 시점까지 모든 요건이 충족되어야 합니다. 하나라도 요건이 충족되지 않으면 프로포절 신청 자체가 불가능합니다. 1학기는 대략 4월 초, 2학기는 대략 10월 초입니다.

Q) Until when do I have to fulfill the TQE requirements(major, English, 2nd language)?

All requirements have to be fulfilled by the time you apply for thesis defense. If even one requirement is not met, you will not be able to apply for the defense. Spring semester will be around early April, and Fall semester will be around early October. If you plan to take a language course in the semester you plan to apply for defense, you will not be able to, because there is you have no grade at the time of application.

[PhD]

All requirements have to be fulfilled by the time you apply for thesis proposal. If even one requirement is not met, you will not be able to apply for the proposal. Spring semester will be around early April, and Fall semester will be around early October.

Q) 복학하지 않고 수강신청할 수 있나요?

수강신청은 학기 시작 전 재학생 및 휴학생 전체를 대상으로 진행됩니다. 수강신청과 복학은 별개입니다. 먼저 수강신청하신 후, 복학 기한 내 복학 신청하실 수 있습니다. 만약 수강신청 한 후 복학하지 않는 경우(휴학 상태) 수업일수 1/4선 이후(1학기는 3월 말, 2학기는 9월 말) 수강신청 내역이 일괄 삭제됩니다.

Q) Can I register for courses without applying for return?

Yes, course registration is open to both enrolled and on-leave students before the semester starts. Course registration and return are separate processes. You can register for courses first and apply for return within the designated period.

However, if you register for courses but do not return (i.e., remain on leave), your course registration will be automatically canceled after the first quarter of the semester (late March for the spring semester, late September for the fall semester).

Q) 수강신청대상자가 아니라는 메시지가 뜹니다.

본인이 수강신청대상자에 포함되지 않았거나 해당 일정의 신청자가 아닐 경우 대상자가 아니라고 표시됩니다. 로그인 후 [수강신청인적정보]로 가셔서 본인이 대상자인지 확인하세요. 수강신청 대상자가 아닐 경우, 인적이 없다고 나옵니다. 인적이 있는데 대상자가 아닌경우는 본인이 신청할 수 있는 대상 날짜가 아닐 수 있습니다. 수강신청 대상자 여부는 해당학기 예비수강신청 직전에 업데이트되며, 수강신청 인적 대상이 아니어도 로그인, 강좌검색, 관심강좌 저장 기능을 사용하실 수 있습니다. 또한 예비수강신청 이전에는 해당학기의 수강신청 인적이 아니라 이전 인적 정보일 수 있으므로 예비수강신청 시기에 정확한 확인이 가능합니다.

Q) I see a message saying I am not eligible for course registration. What should I do?

This message appears when you are not included in the list of eligible students or when you are attempting to register outside of your designated registration period.

Check your eligibility: After logging in, go to [Personal Information] to verify if you are eligible.

If you are not an eligible student, your information will not appear. If your information is there but you are still ineligible, it may mean that your designated registration date has not yet arrived.

The eligibility is updated just before the preliminary course registration period each semester. Even if you are not on the list, you can still log in, search for courses, and save courses to your interest. If you check before the preliminary course registration period, the system may still display previous semester data, so please verify your status when preliminary registration begins.

Q) Can I apply for auditing through the course registration website?

No, you can apply for auditing through eTL website (https://etl.snu.ac.kr/) by navigating to "My Courses" → "TA/Auditor Application."

Q)수강신청 완료 후 eTL사이트에서 해당 교과목에 대해 청강 신청을 했습니다. 이 경우 수강신청 내역이 자동으로 삭제되나요?

수강신청과 eTL사이트에서의 청강신청은 별도로 운영됩니다. 만약 수강신청 후 청강생으로 전환을 희망하신다면, 반드시 수강취소기간(수업일수 1/2선)까지에 해당 교과목을 수강취소하여 주시기 바랍니다.

Q) I completed course registration and then applied for auditing the same course on the eTL website. Would my course registration be automatically canceled?

No, course registration and auditor requests on the eTL website are managed separately. If you wish to switch to audit after registering for a course, you must withdraw from the course during the course change period.

**특정 교수님께서 정원 외 신청 승인을 받아주시는지 여부는 행정실에서 알 수 없습니다. 

Q) 수강신청학점을 모두 채운 경우에도 정원외신청이 가능할까요?

정원 외 신청을 신청할 수 있는 학점은 ‘수강신청가능학점-현재 수강신청된 학점 + 6학점’입니다. 수강신청학점을 모두 채웠더라도 6학점까지 정원외신청을 신청하고 담당 교원 승인까지 받으실 수 있습니다. 다만, 수강확정하기 전 수강신청 가능학점이 초과되지 않도록 수강신청 변경 혹은 수강신청 취소를 통해 수강학점 수를 조정해야 합니다.

Q) Would quota registration course registration be possible even if I have already reached the maximum number of credits for course registration?

The number of credits eligible for extra quota registration is calculated as “maximum allowed credits - currently registered credits + 6 credits.” Even if you have reached your maximum course registration credits, you can still apply for up to 6 additional credits through quota exceeding course registration and obtain approval from the instructor. However, before finalizing your registration, you must adjust your total credits through course changes or cancellations to ensure that you do not exceed the maximum allowed credits.

Q) 정원 외 신청할 교과목이 수강신청한 교과목과 수업시간이 중복되는 경우 정원외신청이 가능할까요?

수업시간이 중복되는 경우에도 정원 외 신청을 신청하고 담당 교원 승인까지 받으실 수 있습니다. 다만, 수강확정할 때에는 수업시간이 중복되면 수강신청에 반영되지 않기 때문에 수강확정 전까지 수강신청 변경 혹은 수강신청 취소를 통해 수업시간을 비워두어야 합니다.

Q) Can I apply for quota exceeding course registration if the course schedule overlaps with a course I have already registered for?

Yes, you can apply for quota exceeding course registration and obtain approval from the instructor even if the course schedule overlaps with another registered course. However, when finalizing your registration, overlapping courses will not be processed in the system. Therefore, you must adjust your schedule by changing or canceling course registrations before finalizing to avoid time conflicts.

Q) 정원외신청이 반려되거나 승인 전 신청취소한 경우, 해당 학점만큼 새로 정원외신청할 수 있나요?

정원외신청이 반려되거나 승인되기 전 신청취소한 경우, 다시 그 학점만큼 기간 내 정원외신청을 다시 신청할 수 있습니다.

Yes, if your quota exceeding course registration request is rejected or canceled before approval, you can register for the same number of credits within the designated period again.

Q) 담당 교원 승인은 받았는데, 미처 기간 내 수강확정하지 못했는데 수강할 수 없게 되나요?

기간 내 수강확정하지 못한 경우 담당 교원의 승인을 받았더라도 수강신청에 내역에 반영되지 않습니다. 반드시 수강확정을 누르시고 수강신청 내역을 확인해주시기 바랍니다.

Q) I received instructor approval for quota exceeding course registration but failed to confirm my course registration within the designated period. Does this mean I cannot take the course?

Yes, if you do not confirm your course registration within the designated period, the course will not be added to your registration, even if you received instructor approval.  

Please make sure to click “Confirm” and check your course registration status to confirm your quota exceeding course registration.
