 On September 20, 2016, 7th FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series, which is the 1st seminar of this semester, was held and Jung Ki Hong from the Ministry of Health & Welfare, gave a lecture to the students of the FTA Commerce and Strategy program under the topic, “Commerce Issues in Health and Welfare Sector.” Mr. Hong explained several commerce-related health issues like price setting of the new drug in FTA negotiations, intellectual property right / patent of new drug and even the labeling issues of the cosmetics. Lastly, he explained how important it is to set the legal criteria in health and welfare sector by showing KORUS FTA and Korea-EU FTA.

Fall 2016 MT for GSIS students

 After the official welcome at the Orientation on the 1st September 2016, our MT for this year was held from the 2nd to 3rd September at the Gubongsan Resort in Yongin. Over 70 students participated and turned it into a lively and fun event. With much food, talking and yes, drinking, we got to know each other and started the Fall Semester 2016. Although games and talkative groups reached well into the night, we got up early the next day and returned together after a collective breakfast. All in all, we hope everyone got to know each other a little bit more and is off to a great Fall 2016!

Fall-2016 Orientation for the New Comers

As the starting of the fall-2016 semester, orientation for the new comers was held at Socheon Convention Hall on September 1, 2016.  The Socheon Hall was full of newly registered students of GSIS.  Professor Ji Yeoun SONG, professor of Political Economy announced the starting of the orientation,  Professor Tae Gyun PARK, associate dean of GSIS introduced the professors and staff of GSIS to the newly arrived students. Prof. Park also introduced the various kinds of scholarship GSIS is offering to the students. Following Prof. Park’s introduction,  Professor Dukgeun AHN, professor of International Trade Law and Policy introduced the FTA Commerce and Strategy Program. For students’ clear understanding,  DCPP is handled by Ms. Raemi Do, at room 202, bldg.. 140  and dual degree and Campus Asia Program is handled by Ms. Sehui Yoon at room 203, bldg. 140.

2016 DCPP Sexual Abuse, Sexual Harassment Preventative Education

SNU Human Rights Center and Office of the DCPP organized the preventative education for sexual abuse and sexual harassment on August 30, 2016 at the Global Leaders’ room, GSIS bldg.  The program included an introduction of sexual abuse and human rights related issues, educated how to prevent them, and provided an opportunity for the students to get together and discuss the issue.  The program was composed of group discussion, lecture, presentation and Q&A session.  It also provided an opportunity for the trainees to discuss together in order to encourage the students’ active participation. Twenty eight (28) students participated in total, including  eighteen (18) students from KOICA program and six (6)  students from DCPP.

Welcoming Ceremony for the 9th DCPP Participants

 The 9th batch of students participating in the Development Cooperation Policy Program (DCPP) have arrived in Seoul and participated in the welcoming ceremony that was held on the 16th of August.  The students first took part in the orientation session that started from 10:00 a.m. After listening to the overall introduction of the program as well as the academic schedules, the students moved to join the welcoming ceremony. The ceremony was jointly held with the new batch of students in the Graduate School of Public Administration (GSPA) at the Convention Hall of GSPA.

The 12th Worldwide Consortium of Korean Studies Centers Workshop

The 12th Worldwide Consortium of Korean Studies Centers Workshop was held from June 23-25, 2016, at GSIS building, co-hosted by Socheon Center for Korean Studies and International Center for Korean Studies at Kyujanggak Institute. This year’s Consortium workshop was attended by more than 40 Directors/Chairs of Korean Studies and graduate students from esteemed universities around the world. The participating universities were Korea University, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Kyushu University, Peking University, Fudan University, the University of Hawai‘i at M?noa, UCLA, the University of British Columbia, Harvard University, the Australian National University, SOAS at University of London, Freie Universitat Berlin, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Far Eastern Federal University, USC, Leiden University, University of Central Lancashire and Ateneo de Manila University.  The presentation session was divided into five sessions, which were Korean literature, Social Science, Joseon Dynasty, Modern Korean history and North Korea. Participating students gave presentations on topics of their choices in each related session, sharing their research and receiving feedback from peers and professors. And in the Director’s meeting, professors responsible for Korean Studies of each university brought up concerns or questions regarding the place of Korean Studies, shared ideas and information and discussed ways to strengthen the current network and to promote exchanges in diverse levels.

A Critique of International Air Practices: Central Asia in Transition

On July 18th, 2016, the Yulchon-GSIS Center for Emerging Economies had held its second special lecture with Dr. Ozcan from Royal Holloway, University of London. As the reader in international business and entrepreneurship, she studies the areas of SMEs, business-politics relations and internationalization of firms. For this special event, she presented on the topic: “A critique of international aid practices: Central Asia in Transition”. Matriculation of International Security Strategy Program (ISSP)

On 14th June 2016, the International Security Strategy Program of the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) had a matriculation for 35 executive students from the Ministry of National Defense and other related public and private organizations.  During the event, Executive Vice President & Provost Chongsuh KIM and Dean of GSIS Chong-Sup KIM gave opening remarks. The faculty of ISSP, Professor PARK Cheol-Hee, Professor PARK Tae Gyun, and Professor SHEEN Seong-Ho) also participated and encouraged the ISSP students for the active participation.  ISSP is an executive program specialized in international security studies encompassing from conventional military security to contemporary human security issues.  Inaugurated in May, ISSP is expected to meet the demand of policy cycles and the students of international security studies.
