GATT Accession 50 Anniversary for Korea

On April 13, 2017, Kora International Trade Association (KITA) and SNU GSIS were pleased to host the forum to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) accession for Korea. The forum invited 8 trade experts to present and discuss on the topic, “The History of 50-year Korean Trade Liberalization and its Future Path.”    Session I began with the overview of the sub-topic, “the 50-year History of Korean Trade Liberalization” that was moderated by Professor Dukgeun Ahn of SNU GSIS. The debate regarding the given sub-topic was discussed by 3 panelists: Seung Wha Chang, a professor of Law at SNU; Jung Taik Hyun, the President of Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP); and JongKap Kim, the Chairman and CEO of Siemens Ltd. Seoul. The panel mainly talked about the major historical trade disputes that Korea has been involved in after joining the GATT.   Session II followed with the overview of the sub-topic, “The Future Goal and Role of Korean Trade Policy” that was moderated by Yoon Heo, the Dean and a professor of GSIS, Sogang University. The debate about the given sub-topic was continuously discussed by other panelists: Taeho Bark, a former trade minister and a professor of SNU GSIS; Byung-Rin Yoo, a visiting professor of College of Life and Science, Kyungpook National University; and Byung-il Choi, a professor of Ewha Womans University. The panel mainly talked about Korea’s future direction in terms of trade policy, and the strategy to enhance trade negotiating capacity.

FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series 2: The Economic Consequences of President Trump

 On April 12, 2017, Dr. Gary Clyde Hufbauer, Reginald Jones Senior Fellow of the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), gave a special lecture to the students on the topic of “The Economic Consequences of President Trump.” Dr. Hufbauer brought his insight about President Trump’s ambitious goals relevant to real GDP growth, job creations, and the US trade deficit. He also explained about the Korean trade barriers to the US exports such as technical barriers to trade, services and investment barriers. At the end of the session, Dr. Hufbauer also answered many questions from the participating students about how other countries should respond to new fiscal and trade policy plans by the Trump Administration.

Challenges to the Rule-Based International Order: Opportunities for ROIK-Australia Cooperation

On April 13th, 2017, Gordon Flake, the founding CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre, gave a special lecture on “Challenges to the Rule-Based International Order: Opportunities for ROK-Australia Cooperation.” Explaining the importance of the liberal world order to countries like Korea and Australia, he highlighted the need for like-minded countries with shared interests and share values to work closely to reinforce the standards, norms and institutions which sustain that order. At the end of the session, he also answered several questions from the participating students about the possibility of ROK-Australia cooperation in terms of North Korea issue and the potential of the MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia).

Asia and the World Series: Transformation of East Asia and Korean Diplomacy

On April 10th, 2017, Young-sun Ha, Chairman of East Asia Institute, gave a lecture to the students in the Asia and the World about “Transformation of East Asia and Korean Diplomacy.” Chairman Ha gave a presentation on the current relationships among the East Asian countries based on 7 major factors; the relationship between the United States and China, North Korea’s nuclear program, the issue of THAAD, South Korea-U.S.-Japan network, Asia-Pacific economic discipline, alliance defense costs, and an operating system for the Asia-Pacific Region. At the end of the session, he also answered the questions from the participating students about the effectiveness of the conferences among countries and the complex politics.

Campus Asia Field Trip to Busan

 From March 31st to April 1st, 2017, spring semester Campus Asia crews went to Busan as the first field trip. It was only  2 days trip, but members visited lots of tour sites as Haeundae beach, APAC summit memorial hall in Dongback island, International Market, Fish Market, Gamcheon Art Village.  The Campus Asia students experienced many historical, famous sites in Busan, and spent precious time with professor and colleagues.  The students discussed about the Campus Asia program and the differences between the countries. By participating at the Campus Asia  field trip, students could learn about second big city in Korea, and was a poerfect opportunity to  understand the geographic differences within Korean peninsula.

The 31st Int. Development Policy Seminar: Understanding Korea’s ODA Policy and Framework.

On March 28th, 2017, Joon-ho Maeng, Senior Deputy Director, ODA Bureau at Prime Minister’s Office, gave a lecture to the students in the International Development Policy Seminar about “Understanding Korea’s ODA Policy and Framework. He gave a presentation on background information and concepts on ODA and framework, policy, volume, allocation, and evaluation of Korea’s ODA project. Students were given the chance to discuss various relevant topics with the deputy director about the development, impact, and future outlook of Korea’s ODA.

On March 22th, 2017, Ha Youn Kim, World Bank Group’s Consultant in Education and Global Practice, gave a lecture to the students in the FTA Commerce and Strategy program about “Chasing The Dream: The Experience Working In The World Bank Group.” Consultant Kim gave a presentation regarding her role and work experience as well as the structure of World Bank Group. Consultant Kim also mentioned about her career path and application process to international institutions. At the end of the session, she also answered the questions from the participating students about the working environment at World Bank Group.

Another Library Orientation to be Held on March 20th

The International Library held an orientation on “How to use the Library“  on March 13, 2017.  The event was planned by GSIS Student Council, and conducted by the International Library’s Sangmi Yang.  The orientation began by introducing the libraries on the campus and explained how to search for materials, use e-resources, search for data, and make use of other services provided by the various libraries.  The orientation was focused on educating students on how to make full use of the library material.  The same presentation in English will be provided to English-speaking students at 1:00~2:30 p.m., on March 20th(Monday), in room 201, Bldg. 140-1 [computer room].  The International Library will continue to provide training to students in need throughout the semester.

Orientation for the FTA Commerce & Strategy Program

 FTA Commerce & Strategy Program has hosted an orientation for Spring-2017 semester on March 13 at GL Room. Due to the absence of Professor Dukgeun Ahn who is in charge of the Program, Jeongjoon Park, the program coordinator, gave a welcoming speech for all the participating students. GSIS Student Orientation in Spring-2017 Semester

Thursday, March 2 marked the first day of the academic year at SNU GSIS. For most students at GSIS, the day meant a return to the familiar routines of academic life. To assuage these potential fears and make new students feel welcome, GSIS traditionally holds an orientation session. This year was no exception, as dozens of new students filled the seats of Socheon Hall.  Dean of SNU GSIS, Dr. Park, Cheol-hee, began the event by introducing faculty and members of staff as well as explaining what, in his view, makes SNU GSIS so special. Next, the Dean shared several tips on how to succeed at GSIS and urged students to always be respectful of other opinions they might encounter. Finally, he congratulated new students on becoming members of GSIS.  Heartened by these words, new students are making a confident start to their first semester at SNU GSIS.
