3rd Tea Time with Professors

On November 21, 2011, the Student Council held the third and last Tea Time with Professors for Fall Semester, 2011. Dean Paik Jin-Hyun was in attendance, along with Associate Dean Park Cheol-Hee, Professor Ahn Duk-geun, and Professor Jacqueline Siapno. Tea Time is an event hosted by the Student Council where students can interact casually with professors and ask questions oustide the sphere of academics. Conversations revolved around a wide range of topics, including professors' interests and hobbies outside of school, their views on the current state of academia, and experiences that they have had throughout their careers as professors and in their personal lives. As always, participants were treated to tea and dinner.

The POSCO Asia Fellowship Scholarship Awarding Ceremony was taken place at the POSCO Center in Daechidong on November 17, 2011. Mitsuaki SHIMAGUCHI, professor of Hosei University

Professor of Hosei University and executive director of Japan Marketing Association Mitsuaki SHIMAGUCHI gave a public lecture titled "Principles for Business Grow-Japanese Experience and Asian Implications" in Sochon Convention Hall on November 14. His lecture focused on principles for business grow and examples. He also discussed that with the rapidly changing environment of this era, revisiting basic principles for building an adaptive strategy accordingly is a necessary step for all.

The 3rd inter GSIS Academic Quiz Competition

The 3rd inter GSIS Academic Quiz Competition took place on November 12th at Korea University. A total of 40 students from Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University participated in the quiz, with two universities being represented by 3 teams and one university with two teams. The quiz questions consisted of a wide variety of topics including Current Events, History, Sports, Economics and Arts. The winning team "Veni Vidi Vici” from Seoul National University was represented by Pierre Kerlann (Area Studies), Vadim Piatov (Cooperation), Ahrum Lee (Commerce) Jonas Lefrancois (Area Studies) and Chan wook In (Japanese Area Studies). The competition ended with “Veni Vidi Vici” coming in first place, receiving the prize money. SNU GSIS won three consecutive victories.

Guangdong Global Leadership Program (G-GLP)

Commissioned by Gyeonggi Province in Korea and Guangdong province in China, GSIS hosted Guangdong Global Leadership Program (G-GLP) from October 11th to October 25th. The program invited 24 CEOs of state-owned companies in Guangdong and provided oversees training session to provide a deeper understanding of Korea-China bilateral trade relationship. In addition, the representatives of Guangdong Province are given an opportunity to acquaint themselves with Korean culture. The exchange hopes to develop and strengthen friendly ties between Korea and China.

Minji Jung (‘11 Int‘l Cooperation) - TWC Global Citizens Program

Minji Jung ('11 International Cooperation) has been selected to participate in The Washington Center(TWC) Global Citizens Program in partnership with Prudential Foundation. Designed to provide an opportunity to understand the role of U.S. government in the context of increasingly globalized business relations, the TWC Program will provide her an internship opportunity in Washington D.C. with funding for her airfare and expenses. She will begin her internship next year.

The Student Council has invited students to the ‘Tea Time with Professor’ event on October 31. At the opening, Associate Dean Park Cheolhee delivered a welcoming speech and then students had casual conversations with prof. Moon Woosik, Han Younhae, Rhee Yeungseop, Sheen Seongho, and Park Taegyun. Dinner was provided after tea time.

SNU GSIS' CAMPUS Asia Program

SNU GSIS' CAMPUS Asia Program (BESETO DDMP: Beijing-Seoul-Tokyo Dual Degree Master's Program on International and Public Policy Studies) was selected by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology with its counterparts: Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University, School of International Studies at Peking University, and  Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Tokyo. In total, 10 academic project groups were chosen for the program. Future participating students will study for a year at each institute and will be able to be awarded by 3 master's degrees within 3 years. 캠퍼스아시아 내년 시범운영… 10개 사업단 年100명 선발 내년부터 매년 100명의 국내 대학·대학원생이 중국과 일본 대학에서 강의를 듣고 학점을 인정받아 학위를 취득할 수 있게 된다. 교육과학기술부와 한국대학교육협의회는 30일 중국 교육부, 일본 문부과학성과 공동으로 추진하는 ‘캠퍼스 아시아’ 시범사업에 참여할 10개 사업단을 선정해 발표했다. 국내에서는 서울대 고려대 등 8개 대학·대학원이 단독 또는 공동으로 사업단에 포함됐다. 캠퍼스 아시아는 지난해 5월 한중일 정상회의에서 대학 교류를 확대하기 위한 방안으로 합의된 후 추진됐다. 3개국 대학 3곳이 짝을 지어 하나의 사업단을 꾸리면 각국 정부가 사업단에 재정 지원을 한다. 사업단에 참여하는 학생들은 3개국 대학을 옮겨 다니며 강의를 들을 수 있고 공동·복수 학위도 받을 수 있다. 예를 들어 서울대 국제대학원, 중국 베이징대 국제관계학원, 일본 도쿄대 공공정책대학원이 뭉친 사업단은 ‘BESETO 국제학 및 공공정책학 복수 석사학위 프로그램’이라는 프로젝트를 추진한다. 여기에 참여하는 학생은 각 대학에서 1년씩 공부한 뒤 졸업할 때 최대 3개 대학의 석사학위를 동시에 받을 수 있다. 동서대 광둥외어외무대 리쓰메이칸대 사업단의 ‘동아시아 인문학 차세대 리더 양성을 위한 트라이앵글 캠퍼스 구상’ 프로젝트는 학부생을 대상으로 한다. 참여 학생들은 다른 나라 대학으로 이동하며 1학기씩 강의를 듣고 학점을 인정받는다. 사업단은 참여 학생들에게 졸업 전 3개월의 해외 인턴십 기회를 제공할 예정이다. 매년 사업단별로 10명씩 선발한다. 사업단이 10개이므로 각국이 100명씩 총 300명의 한중일 학생들이 매년 캠퍼스 아시아에 참여하게 된다. 교과부와 대교협은 내년부터 2015년까지 시범사업단에 포함된 한국 대학에 사업단별로 연간 학생교류비용 1억2400만 원, 프로그램 개발비용 1억 원을 지원할 예정이다. 이 사업에 참여하는 국내 학생은 80만 원 이내의 왕복 항공료와 매달 80만∼90만 원의 체재비를 1년까지 지원받을 수 있다. 학비는 국내 대학에 내면 된다. 구체적인 선발 방법은 교과부와 대교협이 올해 안에 발표할 예정이다. 남윤서 기자 baron@donga.com 동아일보 2011.10.31

Professor Julia Qin of Wayne State University Law School gave a lecture

Professor Julia Qin of Wayne State University Law School gave a lecture titled "China and the WTO: Reflections on the Tenth Year Anniversary of Membership" as part of GSIS Distinguished Lecture Series in Sochon Convention Hall on October 24, 2011. Professor Qin examined the extent and ways in which WTO membership contributed to the meteoric rise of China's economic power. She reflected upon how China's domestic governance and and China's attitude toward international legal order were affected since its accession to the WTO ten years ago. She also examined how China's participation in the WTO influenced the world trading system and the issues and implications of the issues in the China-WTO relationship to the world.

Career Research Project Presentation

GSIS Career Development Center (Advisor: Professor Lee Jeon-Kap) held a presentation session to share the output of the Career Research Project that launched at the end of the previous semester. Out of 6 people, two people presented for the session. Alex Kim ('10 Int’l Cooperation) and ByunJae Choi ('11 Int’l Cooperation) presented their future career plans and research outcomes. They shared how they can prepare in order to pursue their career goals and hiring procedure of organizations/companies they plan to work in future. Through this project, students had a chance to design specific career plans to fulfill their career goals. After the presentations, the presenters received practical and constructive advice from Professor Lee who has vast experience in the corporate field. Professor Lee recommended students not to focus too much on obtaining various licenses, but to build skills that respective organizations and companies require. For those who are interested in NGOs or social work, he recommended a 'two-track career path' of working at a for-profit organization as a short-term career path while participating in social work as a long-term path. He also added that it is better to go on a different track from others instead of following what everyone else is pursuing. ByunJae Choi said this opportunity motivated him not only to do further research on his future career but also to initiate forming a study group on campus to prepare for recruitment in advance.
