Amb. Choi Young-Jin, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN to Cote-d‘IvoireOn November 15th, Amb. Choi Young-Jin, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN to Cote-d'Ivoire, visited GSIS and gave a lecture titled "UN Peace Operation in the 21st Century". Amb. Choi talked about how paradigm shifts have been changing the way we live. He pointed out that the increase in size and number of UN Peacekeeping Operations is a natural result of such fundamental paradigm shift on the internatinal level. Amb. Choi also talked about his future mission in Cote-D'Ivoire and shared his personal views on UN Peace Operations with many students.

Homecoming partyHomecoming party was held at Hoam Convention Center on October 23. Over 300 people participated in this event, including 150 alumni, 130 students and 30 faculty and staff members. Dean Taeho Bark, student council president Youngjin Chun and Ms. Seung-Hyun Kim (Int'l Commerce, entering class of 1997) each delievered congratulatory speech. Alumni Association was formed where Sae-Ryun Yang (Int'l Commerce, entering class of 1997) and Hyung-Kyu Lim(Int'l Commerce, entering class of 2002) was selected as president and manager, respectively. We expect an active alumni association. Professors contributed to this event by donating various gifts. From cell phones to wine, flower vase, cosmetics sets, USB and gift certificates, various gifts were given out. Student Council prepared OX and bingo games to hand out these gifts. The event began at 6 p.m. and ended a little over 10.p.m. After the official ceremony, people gathered to continue the celebration and had a wonderful time. We hope that people can reunite again next year.

10 years of GSISCommemoration celebrating the 10 years of GSIS was held on 23 October in Sochon Convention Hall. President Lee of SNU, First Dean Hong of GSIS and Ambassor Chua Thai Keong of Singapore delivered meaningful addresses to the room full of students, professors and other faculty members. During the event, former GSIS deans were recognized and awarded with plaques of appreciation for their efforts in improving GSIS during their tenure.

POSCO Asia Fellowship Awarding CeremonyPOSCO TJ PARK Foundation (Lee Ku Taeh, Chief of Board of Directors) held POSCO Asia Fellowship Awarding Ceremony last Friday (26 October) at the POSCO Center. Over 100 people from diplomatic and academic circle participated in the ceremony including Mr. Lee Ku Taeh, H.E. N.Parthasarathi, Ambassador of India to Korea, Park Chul, President of Hankook University of Foreign Studies, Chung Un-Chan, Former President of SNU, Kim Shin-Bok, Vice President of SNU, and Bark Taeho, Dean of GSIS, SNU. With Mr. Podal from India (currently studying at GSIS, Korea University) and Ms. Zhang Ranning from China (currently studying at GSIS, SNU) serving as MCs, talent shows by Chinese and Indian students were performed, adding excitment to the event. Four Chinese students from GSIS, SNU (Zhang Ranning, Dong Lei, Yin Ying, Wu Jia) sang a Chinese song titled 'Tian Mi Mi' and was greeted with a big applause.

Mr.Nayan Chanda, the director of publicationsThere was a distinguished lecture by Mr.Nayan Chanda, the director of publications at the Yale center and the former editor of Far Eastern Economic Review at Sochon Converntion Hall, GSIS on 29th of October with the title "Bound together - a history of globalization". He conveyed a very impressive lecture and participants asked many questions with regard to the globalization.

Mr. Kato Koichi, former secretary general of the Japan's prominent Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)Mr. Kato Koichi, former secretary general of the Japan's prominent Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and member of Japan's House of Representatives, visited GSIS to deliver a lecture entitled "Political Changes in Japan and Asian Diplomacy" on October 8th. In his lecture, Kato stressed that Japanese nationalism has been changing in constructive ways. He also stressed that Yasuo Fukuda, newly elected prime minister of Japan, who was appointed to his position under the changed faction structure of the LDP, will try to improve Japan's diplomatic relations with its neighboring countries.

Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of UNIDOOn October 8th, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of UNIDO gave a lecture titled "Industrial Policy: Its Relevance Today". In his very dynamic lecture, Dr. Yumkella praised how Asian countries have succeeded in developing their economies through scientific development and education and emphasized the importance of adopting such exprience in African and other LDCs. He also stressed the point that poverty is closely related to security and explained how UNIDO is working toward realizing MDGs with other UN organizations.

Prof. John Lie from UC BerkeleyOn September 17th, prof. John Lie from UC Berkeley gave a lecture on "The Research University". In the lecture, he introduced the concept of research university and applied it to explain why UC Berkeley is considered as one of the top universities in the world. He also gave advice on how Korean universities including SNU should transform themselves into a well-respected research university.

Prof. Victor Cha from Georgetown UniversityOn September 14th, prof. Victor Cha from Georgetown University gave a lecture on "US Policy toward East Asia and the Korean Peninsula". In the lecture, he criticized the prevailing thought that East Asia is no longer in United States' interest and pointed out that US-China and US-Japan relations have improved and strengthened. He also explained that US-North Korea relations will improve only if North Korea gives up its nuclear programs completely. After his lecture a Q & A session was held where many though provoking questions were raised by professors and students.

At the Graduation ceremony Ms. Kim, Eun-young delivered a valedictory speech representing her fellow graduating classmates. Professors, distinguished guests, and family members were all in attendance for this joyous occasion to congratulate the graduates on their achievement.
