The title of his lecture was “One Alliance, Two Lenses: US-Korea Relations in a New Era.” He began with a brief introduction on the US-Korea Relations entering the 21st century. Then gave a very detailed analysis from his studies on how the US-Korea relations are seen through the eyes of the Korean and US media from a time frame of ten years. He emphasizes about policy issues, identity, and power.

On April 8th, Dr. Kenichi Ohmae visited GSIS and had a public lecture. He is called as "Mr. Strategy" and famous for management consultant. He was selected as one of five management gurus in the world. During lecture, he mainly talked about a general current economic trend and Korean economy. He also focused on East Asian and Japanese economy to support his statement on world and Korean economy. The lecture was fascinating, and about 250 audience including students and professors attended. All students seemed to love Ohmae's speech, and unusual number of students wanted to ask questions about the lecture.

On March 19, S.E.M. Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, France dedicated a special lecture about the ‘regional and global crisis management.’ Doctor, politician, diplomat, Bernard Kouchner Renaldi, was the co-founder of ‘Doctors Without Border’ and ‘Doctors of the World’. His lecture was based on current ideology/ideological differences between the present and the future of uncertainties with risks of terrorism, nuclear issues, etc. He emphasized that globalization can be viewed as a negative aspect. Thus the current crisis in the economy, environment and energy must be changed through our actions and mindsets. Above all, the crisis management structure should not only be achieved by the international organizations but also with political will from domestic politics and foreign politics.

GSIS invited Professor Motoshige Itoh from Faculty of Economics, the University of Tokyo. On March 9, he gave a public lecture on titled ‘Asia and Japan’s Recent Economic Trends,’ which was to give the students to reflect and educate about Japan and the global economic trends. The speaker concentrated on topics from the East Asian financial crisis to Asia’s economic development with emphasis on the Japanese economy arguing that the global economy is constantly changing.

GSIS students won the first prize at the graduate student trade thesis competition

GSIS students won the first prize at the graduate student trade thesis competition held by Korea International Trade Association(KITA) and the Korea Economic Daily. Wonkyu Shin(Int'l Commerce 08), Jungjoo La(Int'l Commerce 07) took part in the contest as a team named New Silkroad(新실크로드), wrote a thesis titled "The effect of Export Production Sophistication on Korean Export Growth: Analysis on EU Market " under the guidance of Prof. Chong-Sup Kim. GSIS SNU has been awarded the first prize at the competition for many times under the instruction of Prof. Kim. '유럽 선진 시장을 뚫으려면 품질을 고급화하는 것만으로는 안된다. 독창성과 친환경성도 고려해야 한국 수출시장을 개척할 수 있다 ''.     제46회 무역의 날 기념 대학(원)생 무역논문 발표대회에서 대상을 수상한 ‘신(新)실크로드’팀 논문의 요지다. 한국경제신문사와 한국무역협회가 매년 공동 주최하는 이 행사에선 한국 무역의 미래를 밝혀줄 심도 깊은 논문들이 나와 눈길을 끌었다. 무역협회는 지난 23일 서울 삼성동 무역센터에서 시상식을 열고 대상 1000만원, 우수상 500만원의 상금과 상패를 전달했다. 올해 대상은 '수출상품의 고급화가 한국수출성장에 미치는 영향, EU시장을 중심으로'를 발표한 서울대학교 국제대학원의 '신(新)실크로드'팀이 거머쥐었다.     우수상은 '지속가능한 성장을 위한 한국의 무역전략, 동북아 에너지 공동체 수립'을 주제로 한 이화여자대학교 국제대학원의 '사인방'팀과 '국내 해운선사의 물류서비스품질 경쟁력 강화 방안'을 발표한 성균관대학교 대학원 무역학과의 'M-ART'팀이 차지했다.     심사위원장을 맡은 성극제 경희대학교 국제대학원 원장은 "예년에 비해 전반적으로 논문의 수준이 향상됐다"고 평가했다. 그는 "방대한 통계 자료의 수집과 분석 등에 많은 시간을 할애한 창의적이고도 분석적인 논문들이 많았다"며 "무엇보다 수출 상품의 고급화나 지속가능한 성장, 신성장동력 등 우리나라 무역이 발전해 나가야 할 방향에 대한 대학(원)생들의 심도있는 고민이 엿보였다는 것도 매우 고무적"이라고 덧붙였다.

Professor Patrick A. Messerlin, professor of economics at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris and director of the Groupe d’Economie Mondiale de Sciences Po (GEM), gave a special lecture at Seoul National University’s Graduate School for International Studies on October 8th, 2009. The lecture, titled The World Trade Regime, WTO, and Large Scale Economic Crises, addressed the current state of global trade, potential challenges for the future, and policies to resolve these issues. In general, while protectionism in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis as not as severe as expected, professor Messerlin maintained that efforts to further liberalize and reform the world trading regime must be redoubled if nations are to successfully tackle climate change, resource scarcity, and the distorting effects of industry subsidization. These efforts would involve both current negotiations in the WTO as well as involvement from new parties in the G20. Finally, during the Q&A session, professor Messerlin answered questions on a wide range of topics such as the G8, agricultural protections, and the EC’s preferential trade agreement with ACP. His responses, however, were consistent with the contents and message of his lecture.

  On September 24th, Professor Cheol-hee, Park of GSIS, who is currently on sabbathical leave in Japan gave a lecture titled “Regime Change in Japan.” In his lecture, he mainly talked about the recent regime change in Japan and the advent of the Hatoyama regime of Japanese Democratic party. After presenting and analysing the result of the national election, he also discussed the meaning of Japanese regime change in 50 years and the future prospects of Japanese politics.

Alumni Interview: Mr. Oleg Kiriyanov - 98 Korean Major

The valuable assets of the GSIS Oleg Kiriyanov, Russian national daily “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” The special correspondent of the international news department Though the GSIS opened its doors in 1997 the Korean studies department created for foreign students appeared only in 1998. So we were the first foreigners to study at the Institutute. Right before the beginning of the classes I was a bit worring. About ten students were studing at our department and everybody had different backgroung and wanted different fields to specialize in: politics, economy, literature, linguistics, culture, etc. How all of them could be satisfied? Fortunately the system turned out to be quite flexible and every student had chance to study his or her favorite subject. At the same time we felt ourselves as a part of the whole GSIS  community and Korean students were really good friends for us. Actually I can say that I did not feel myself a foreigner ? just a student like everybody else. Before entering GSIS I graduated International relations department of SNU and teachers of GSIS  seemed to me more flexible. Well, probably there was an another reason for that: we were now graduate students and not yesterday’s schoolchildren and it is always easier to pay special attention to the group of ten students than to a class of 50-60 ones like at the undergraduate programme. Anyway conversations with our teachers both formal at classrooms and informal with a glass of beer or a cup of coffee somewhere outside of the Institute are among unforgettable memories from GSIS. Later after I became a journalist I also realized that besides the knowledge about interKorean relations and Korean politics which were my majors the GSIS  gave me one of the most valuable assets ? friends. That helped and keeps helping me in both professional and personal spheres. When I returned to Korea 4 years later after graduation from the GSIS  I was surprised and please to see many of my classmates at the press-conferences. Some of them became politicians, some work for famous companies, some passed difficult exams and work for different ministries of the governments and many became like me journalists. We chosed different carreers and many of us live or work even in different countries but we all remember that we have the same alma mater - the GSIS, SNU.

Congressman Eni F.H. Faleomavaega of the United States, serving as Senior Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific

On September 4th, Congressman Eni F.H. Faleomavaega of the United States, serving as Senior Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, visited GSIS and gave a lecture titled "An Overview of the Political and Economic Climate of the Asia Pacific." In his lecture, he discussed the extent to which the Asia-Pacific American community has contributed to what the United States is today. He did not forget to mention, however, that it is only recently Eurocentric Washington D.C. got deeply interested in issues concerning Asia, due to its unpleasant historical experience with regard to the region. President Obama engaging constantly with President Hu Jintao through strategic alliance called G2 summit is an evidence of such, the Congress said.

Graduation ceremony - August 28th

Graduation ceremony was held on August 28th in the Socheon Convention Hall, GSIS. Valedictory speech was delivered by Ms. Mi Sook Park. 19 students from the Department of International Development Policy graduated making them the first graduates of the KOICA program. Professors, distinguished guests, and family members were all in attendance for this joyous occasion to congratulate the graduates on their achievement.
