On October 8th, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of UNIDO gave a lecture titled "Industrial Policy: Its Relevance Today". In his very dynamic lecture, Dr. Yumkella praised how Asian countries have succeeded in developing their economies through scientific development and education and emphasized the importance of adopting such exprience in African and other LDCs. He also stressed the point that poverty is closely related to security and explained how UNIDO is working toward realizing MDGs with other UN organizations.

On September 17th, prof. John Lie from UC Berkeley gave a lecture on "The Research University". In the lecture, he introduced the concept of research university and applied it to explain why UC Berkeley is considered as one of the top universities in the world. He also gave advice on how Korean universities including SNU should transform themselves into a well-respected research university.

On September 14th, prof. Victor Cha from Georgetown University gave a lecture on "US Policy toward East Asia and the Korean Peninsula". In the lecture, he criticized the prevailing thought that East Asia is no longer in United States' interest and pointed out that US-China and US-Japan relations have improved and strengthened. He also explained that US-North Korea relations will improve only if North Korea gives up its nuclear programs completely. After his lecture a Q & A session was held where many though provoking questions were raised by professors and students.

On May 29th, prof. Andrew Gordon from Harvard University gave a lecture on "「Does Japan Have a 'Normal' History?」". In the lecture, he addressed the issue of the ways in which, and the degree to which, the modern history of Japan shares much with a modern global history, illustrating this point with diverse and interesting examples from the history of Japan and Asia from the mid or late 19th through the 20th century.

Mr. Joel S. Wit, a research scholar at Columbia University

  On May 14th, 2007, a distinguished lecture was given by Mr. Joel S. Wit, a research scholar at Columbia University, on “Why George Bush Should Visit North Korea?” With his experience of serving for 15 years in the Department of State as a US-North Korea relation specialist, Mr. Wit insisted the importance of US’s bilateral talk with North Korea and presented a provocative way to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, Bush’s visit to North Korea, and the expanding of the US’s engagement policy through establishing a political and economical relationship. After his lecture an active Q and A session followed where students and professors shared their ideas on current issues of North Korea with Mr. Wit.

Mr. Wakamiya Yosibumi, chariman of the editorial

  On May 10th, the Graduate School of International Studies had the privilege to host a distinguished lecture by Wakamiya Yosibumi, chariman of the editorial board for Asahi Shimbun. His lecture was on the issues of “Japanese nationalism and Asia ’s reconciliation.” A few of the topics he covered were on former Prime Minister Koizumi’s Yasukuni Shrine visitations, the reunification of the two Korea’s from the perspective of the Japanese, abduction issues with North Korea, and Japan’s controversy on the ratification of article 9 of its constitution. The lecture was very stimulating and insightful as the students and chairman discussed many sensitive issues in which has been stirring up discourse internationally. Mr. Wakamiya Yosibumi’s visitation to our GSIS was greatly appreciated, and our faculty and students were able to learn from his perspective and the general views of the Japanese regarding these key subjects which academia has been and is continually researching and analyzing today.

Prof. Alan. Deardorff, University of Michigan

On May 2nd, 2007, a distinguished lecture was given by prof. Alan V. Deardorff from John W. Sweetland Professor of International Economics, University of Michigan, on "What Should the Developing Countries Do in the Context of the Current Impasse of the Doha Round?”. Prof. Alan V. Deardorff presented that Doha Round which was Intended to continue the multilateral trade liberalization of 50 years under the GATT and promised to give special attention to needs of developing countries. But it faced impasse because of both developed countries and developing countries. He stressed if the Doha Round failed, then the best remaining options could be aid for trade, bilateral and regional FTAs, and unilateral liberalization in most, but not all, cases.

On April 26th, 2007 a distinguished lecture was delivered by Zhang Wenyue, the governor of the Liaoning Provincial government, China, on the topic of “Enhancing Friendly Communication, and Creating a hand in hand Bright Future”. For the first part of his lecture, he mentioned the long and friendly history of Korea and China, and then he emphasized the necessity of future cooperation. In the Q&A session, active questions were followed, and it was a very meaningful time in sharing opinions on various issues about China's rapid development and influence.

Prime Minister of Italy, H.E. Romano Prodi

Our GSIS had the privilege to host the Prime Minister of Italy, H.E. Prof. Romano Prodi on April 18th, 2007. See the article of SNU PR Office directly below; Prime Minister of Italy, Romano Prodi visited GSIS, SNU to deliver a lecture entitled "Peace and Prosperity through Integration: An Italian Perspective on European Experience and Asian Challenge” on April 18th. (more) Before the lecture, the minister said that he was told SNU has trained most of the political leaders of Korea, so he wouldn’t speak to ‘young students’ but would do with ‘future leaders’. Through the lecture Prodi emphasized that no matter how hard the integration is, it will bring peace and prosperity which men have longed for. Prodi said that people outside of Europe do not seem to consider EU as a big change in world history but the integration of Europe has really been shifting the world to another level. The minister proudly stated that EU is literally, exporting democracy to rest of the world’. Prodi devoted half of his lecture to give details of how difficult to integrate 27 European countries to become a ‘Europe’. His 7 years of experience as Chairman of EU Commission added liveliness to the story. He said that it is beyond our imagination that countries with their own economic interest and languages finally reached a practical unanimity to be a Union. Prodi said he believe that East Asia would be able to reach an integration despite all the problems with North Korea and conflicts between Korea and Japan. He said that he wishes some day EU and ‘Asian Union’ cooperate on world’s issues like promoting DOHA Development Agenda, helping Africa, and hopefully abolishing death penalty. He finished his lecture, saying he wanted SNU students to believe their own abilities to reach a peace and prosperity.
