Chanmi Kim was selected as a "JPO"

Ms. Chanmi Kim (International Cooperation ’07) was selected as one of this year's JPOs, having passed the exam administered by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Ms. Chanmi Kim is the GSIS’s 2nd JPO following Hyewon Lee (International Cooperation ’04) who is currently working as a program officer at the Unicef Belgium after having been selected as JPO in 2006. Congratulations! What is JPO? The Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Programme provides young professionals pursuing a career in International Organizations with hands-on experience. JPOs are sponsored by their respective governments and are dispatched to an International Organization for a period of 2 years. JPOs are assigned to work at organizations such as UNDP, UNICEF, UNIDO, UNHCR, IAEA, UNCTAD, UNV, WHO, ILO, UNESCO, and UNFPA.

Dr. Il SaKong, Chairman of KITA

On June 4th, Dr. Il SaKong, Chairman of Korea International Trade Association (KITA), visited GSIS and delivered a lecture titled “G-20 Summit: Achievements, Prospects and Korea’s Role.” In his lecture, he introduced the origin and development of the G-20 meetings and shared the outcomes of its recent meetings. In response to the mixed global reactions, he insisted that the G-20 meetings should be continued, differentiated from the G7/8, and eventually institutionalized. Regarding Korea’s role, Dr. SaKong described Korea’s new global leadership as one of the G-20 troika countries as a new chapter to Korea’s diplomatic history and insisted that the event should be recognized domestically as well as internationally.

On May 15th, a Korea-Japan Symposium

On May 15th 2009, a symposium titled “Global Economic Crisis and Korea-Japan Cooperation” was convened at Sochon Convention Hall, GSIS. During four hours, Professor Joon-Kyung Kim at KDI School and Dr. Yosuke KAWAKAMI, Executive Director at the Deposit Insurance Corporation of Japan (DICJ) presented their views on the necessity of stronger economic collaboration between Korea and Japan in such global turmoil and its possible impact on the East Asian economy. Following, three discussants shared their opinions and comments on the two presentations with the audience.

Prof. Anne O. Krueger, SAIS, Johns Hopkins Univ.

On April 15th, Anne O. Krueger, Professor of Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, Former First Deputy Managing Director of International Monetary Fund(IMF), and Former Vice President of World Bank, visited GSIS and gave a lecture titled “The Current Global Economic Slowdown and Asia.” In her lecture, Prof. Krueger discussed the daunting challenges of the global crisis we face today due to its complex mixture of the conventional Keinzian recession and the balance sheet recession. Yet, her prospects for the world economy were optimistic in the short and medium-term while rather pessimistic for the long-term. Meantime, she urged for the need of more global leadership coming from Asian countries.

Professor Paik, Jin-Hyun was elected as a Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) at the Special Meeting of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) held at the UN Headquarter in New York on 6 March, 2009. Prof. Paik will serve as a Judge until 30 September 2014.

On November 10th, Mr. Federico Rampini, La Repubblica Asia Chief Correspondent and Senior Global Columnist, visited GSIS and gave a lecture titled “China in 2008: Between the Olympic Games and the Global Economic Crisis”. In his lecture, he discussed the effects the current economic crisis and the recent Olympic Games have on China's course of development. He also talked about the different contradictions that exist in China today and went on further to forcast China's future.
