  • Reshma Kamath, First Place Winner of the 2011-2012 Base of Pyramid (BOP)

    Reshma Kamath has been awarded as the First Place Winner of the 2011-2012 Base of Pyramid (BOP) Narrative Competition at the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management. This is a short-essay competition that seeks to highlight the challenges of implementing business in underserved markets and identify innovative business initiatives or solutions to those challenges. This was sponsored by USAID and International Finance Corporation (IFC). This year the competition attracted 115 submissions from 27 countries illustrating a diverse array of businesses in 36 different countries.The winning submission was able to clearly articulate a business challenge that an organization, either a non-profit or for-profit enterprise, working in low-income communities is striving to overcome.This competition seeks to highlight the challenges of implementing business in underserved markets and identify innovative business initiatives or solutions to those challenges. Reshma Kamath's essay titled "Jayaashree Industries: The Low Cost Sanitary Napkin Maker" highlighted the initiatives of an entrepreneur in India manufacturing low cost sanitary napkins for rural and poverty stricken women. She wanted to bring greater awareness to women's reproductive and menstrual health issues, which is an often ignored topic in developing countries. Her essay will be highlighted on the new website for The Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management. She will receive award money ($4000) and a chance to attend the USAID's Speaker's Corner as the leading participant.   • On May 19th, GSIS Career Development Center

    On May 19th, GSIS Career Development Center (Advisor: professor Lee, Jeon-Kap) has held a career mentoring session for public enterprises and national research institutions. Both Shim, Yong-Joo (SNU GSIS graduate) who previously worked at KSURE: Korea Trade Insurance Corporation and Lee, Eun-Suk (SNU GSIS Ph. D candidate) who previously worked as a researcher for KOPEC shared their knowledge not only of particular business in general but also of finding jobs in certain fields. Many GSIS students freely raised questions and were able to receive professional advice that would help students to pursue related jobs in the future. Also, last semester’s International Commerce representative Lee, Jee-Hye supported an interview session with Standard Chartered Bank on May 27th. This session was solely targeted to SNU MBA and GSIS students to introduce the International Graduate Program and to consult with current workers. We expect high attention and participation of GSIS students in subsequent Career Development Center career mentoring sessions.

  • The 2nd inter GSIS Academic Quiz Competition took place on May 7th at Yonsei

    The 2nd inter GSIS Academic Quiz Competition took place on May 7th at Yonsei University. A total of 35 students from Yonsei University, Korea University and of course Seoul National University, participated in the quiz, with two university being represented by 3 teams and one university with one team. The quiz questions consisted of a wide variety of topics including Current Events, History, Politics, Economics, Korean Studies and the Arts. The winning team "West East” from Seoul National University was represented by Yi Kwon (Area Studies), Vadim Piatov (Cooperation), Ah Reum Lee (Japanese Area Studies), Yina Yoon (Japanese Area Studies) and Yevgeniy Kim (Cooperation). Our reputation of being Number #1 preceded us which the team was only too happy to reaffirm. The competition ended with “West East” coming in first place, receiving the prize money. Also, SNU had the most points for combined university scores.

    The Institute for Japanese Studies has invited Prof.Jin-Hyun Paik, Dean of GSIS and Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, to its seminar on May 4th, 2011 in GL-Room. He presented a lecture titled “International Disputes and International Tribunals” and mentioned various examples including the Dokdo dispute.

Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, gave a lecture titled “Asia’s Challenges in the 21st Century” on May 2nd, 2011 in Sochon Convention Hall. He pointed three challenges facing Asia in this century: peace, good governance, and sustainable development.

In his lecture titled "Korea-US FTA: Untold Story," he provided insight into complex process of trade negotiations and FTAs based on his experience as the Minister of Trade.

    As part of the GSIS "Asia and the World" Lecture Sereies, Mr. Kazuo Ogoura, President of Japan Foundation, gave a lecture titled "Nonverbal Communication in Diplomacy: Gift, Food and Music" on April 4th, 2011 in Sochon Convention Hall. His lecture focused on how nonverbal methods of communication via gesture, gift, food and music can serve as an important tool in international diplomacy.

  • 2011 GSIS MT at Anmyon-do

    On March 25th and 26th, 2011 GSIS MT was held in Anmyon-do. A total of 57 students as well as Professor Chong-sup Kim participated in this event. All the participants had great fun playing paintball shooting games and riding 4-wheel mountain motorbikes(AKA ATVs). Students ranging from first semesters to those in their final semesters mingled all together throughout the night, singing and dancing at the karaoke, and playing ice breaking games. Many found nature-rich Anmyon-do beach to be a welcome change from everyday city life.

    A distinguished lecture was given by Professor Erik Thorbecke (H.E. Babcock Professor of Economics, Emeritus at Cornell University) on March 23rd, 2011 at the GL-Room. He took some time to introduce his most recent publication named "The Poor under Globalization in Asia, Latin America, and Africa" and delivered his lecture on the topic of linking poverty to globalization in these regions. After his lecture a Q and A session was held where many students and professors raised various questions.
