Career Mentoring Session III for International Students

  GSIS Career Development Center (Advisor: Professor Lee Jeon-Kap) held its 3rd Alumni Mentoring Session for this semester on October 13. This time, the session was specifically targeted towards international students at GSIS who wish to work in Korea. Two GSIS international graduates Viviana Passoni from Hyundai Motor Company and Vladislav Li from Samsung C&T came for this session to give information on recruiting process in Korea for foreigners and to share their work experiences. Many international students who attended found the session helpful, learning about procedure of entering Korean companies as foreigners, importance of knowing Korean language to work in Korean firms, and how to prepare for recruitment. As a way to enter Korean companies, international students were recommended to start with summer internships in Korea to increase possibility of getting permanent positions. They were also recommended to utilize SNU Headquarters’ Career Development Center website, where many job/internship positions for foreigners are posted. The speakers mentioned that Professor Lee Jeon-Kap’s course on Globalization & Korean Firms and Professor Park Se-Il’s course on Labor & Social Policy were helpful in understanding structure and culture of Korean firms prior to working in Korea. The next session with alumni from KITA and Hyundai Research Institute is planned to be held in the first week of November after the midterm period. We hope that many of those who are planning to pursue their career at research institutions will come and join the session.

Former Ambassador to China Byung-tae Hwang

  Former Ambassador to China Byung-tae Hwang gave a special lecture titled “Development Paradigm under President Jung-Hee Park” in GL-Room on September 29. His lecture focused on President Park's contribution to Korea's economic development. He also discussed President Park's influence on China's economic development at the time of his ambassadorship.

Career Mentoring Session for International Organizations

The 2nd Career Mentoring Session by the GSIS Career Development Center (Advisor: Professor Lee, Jeon-Kap) was held on October 6th. The mentoring session was designed for those who would like to pursue their careers in international organizations, and reflecting GSIS students’ high interest in international organizations, many students including international students attended the session. As mentors for the session, GSIS research students Sung Eun Lee (UNESCO Consultant) and Mi Hyun Lee (UNDP Intern), and SNU graduate Seung Sok Ryu (ILO Intern) were invited and shared their work experiences at the international organizations. They talked about different tracks of getting an internship at international organizations, types of work they did, and what they felt while working in those organizations. Listening to the speakers’ presentations on their actual experiences, students were able to see the differences between working at headquarters and field offices of international organizations, and also pros and cons of working in those organizations. The 3rd Career Mentoring Session will be held this Thursday (10/13) before midterms. International graduates from GSIS who are currently working at Hyundai Motors and Samsung C&T will be invited and share their experiences of working in Korean companies. We look forward to seeing many students at the session.

[Yulchon-GSIS Center] Making Africa Work: Trends and Options

Dr. Greg Mills visited SNU GSIS last October 2nd to conduct a lecture on "Making Africa Work: Trends and Options." While Professor Chong-Sup Kim gave us an opening remark and Professor Taekyoon Kim facilitated the lecture, SNU GSIS students (including the DCPP students) and students from Hanguk University of Foreign Studies participated in the lecture. After an extensive lecture as to the status quo and the challenges Africa face - starting from demographic change, urban opportunities, and commodity prices, a 30-minute Q&A session was conducted wherestudents asked questions that ranged from econoimc performance, climate, democracy, and international engagement.

Tea Time With Professors

The Student Council held its first ever Tea Time with Professors on September 26, 2011. Associate Dean Park made opening remarks, and then it was time for students to join their professors for tea and dinner. Tea Time gives students a chance to get to know their professors outside of the classroom and discuss things beyond academics and classwork in a relaxed setting. At this most recent Tea Time, students inquired about a wide range of topics, including professors' research interests, their hobbies outside of school, how they ended up choosing to pursue careers in academia, their personal motivations and aspirations, and others. Participating professors for the first ever Tea Time were Professor Kim Chong-Sup, Prof. Lee Geun, Prof. Moon Hwy-Chang, Prof. Park Tae-Gyun and Prof. Jeong Jong-Ho. The next Tea Time with Professors is scheduled for Monday, October 31, 2011.

Alumni Mentoring Session - Career Development Center

On Septerber 17th, GSIS Career Development Center (Advisor: Professor Lee, Jeon-Kap) has held a career mentoring session for Korean firms. For this session, GSIS alumni were invited. Dabin Kwon (LG Display), Jahye Park (Hyundai Motors), and Jooyeon Hong (KT) shared their experience not only of hiring measures but also of working environments. Especially, they talked about their personal stories to set future plans. Many GSIS students felt free to share their problems and raise questions. They were able to receive professional advice that would help students to pursue related jobs in the future. International students also joined this session and show high interest in Korean firms. We expect more attention and participation of GSIS students in subsequent Career Development Center career mentoring sessions.

Wine and Cheese Party

  The student council held the Wine and Cheese Party to celebrate the beginning of 2011 fall semester on September 7, 2011. The event began with Associate Dean Cheol-Hee Park’s welcoming remarks, which gave an overview of what students should expect during the semester. Many returning students joined to welcome and meet the new class including the newly admitted MIDP students and the exchange students. Professors from all majors also attended to meet and greet the students. After the Wine and Cheese Party, students continued on the festivities with dinner and drinks off campus.

2011 FALL COMMENCEMENT

The 2011 Fall Commencement for GSIS Masters in International Studies and Masters in International Development Policy was held on August 29, 2011. At this Fall Commencement, a total of 53 Master's candidates in International Studies received their degrees - 15 majoring International Commerce, 18 in International Cooperation, 16 in International Area Studies, and 4 in Korean Studies. 19 Masters in International Development Policy students received their certificates of completion. At the graduation ceremony, Mr. Geary Choi delivered the valedictory speech on behalf of the student body. The graduation ceremony recorded the largest audience of family and friends to congratulate the students on their achievement. Congratulations, graduates!

ADB-KIEP-SNU GSIS International Conference.

  Asia Development Bank (ADB), Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), and SNU GSIS co-hosted an international conference titled "Trand and Development -Asia's Turningpoint" on June 30th, in Sochon Convention Hall. The conference provided strategic guidance for Asian countries in building a regional macro-financial-trade policy framework to coordinate efforts to address the development issues with more comprehensive policies for rebalancing.
