  • Professor Dukgeun Ahn has been selected as the winner of the 5th Shimdang Academic Prize awarded by Korea International Trade Law Association

  • Somaly Mam, Representative of the Somaly Mam Foundation

    The first GSIS Public Lecture: Asia and the World of the year 2012 was held on the 26th March at Sochon Convention Hall. Somaly Mam, a Cambodia human rights activist and a representative of the Somaly Mam Foundation, gave a lecture titled "Actions against Human Trafficking in Cambodia". A victim of human trafficking herself, she shared her own experience, the stories of girls she has saved and the work of NGOs to fight against sex slavery and human trafficking.

  • Reshma Kamath: Winner of TransAtlantic Research Award

    Reshma Kamath, majoring in International Cooperation '10, was chosen as one of four winners of the First Annual TransAtlantic Research Award organized by the Atlantic Treaty Association and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). This Research Award contest was open to all university students in 10 BRIC+ nations, who had to write an essay on new emerging security challenges. Ms. Kamath's paper was titled "Cyber Sustainability in India: Potential for Euro-Atlantic Partnership," for which she received the opportunity to visit Brussels, Belgium for a week long study tour. Some of the highlights of this study tour were visiting the NATO Headquarters in Brussels, visiting the NATO E-3A AWACS Air Base, receiving lectures and briefings from distinguished officials from Euro-Atlantic Institutions, and drafting a policy statement on North Atlantic relations with its global partners.

  • The seminar on “the Rise of China and the Recent Trends of Korea, Japan and Australia’s China Policy” was held at GSIS

    The seminar on “the Rise of China and the Recent Trends of Korea, Japan and Australia’s China Policy” was held at GSIS on March 16th, 2012. This seminar was a joint effort between the Institute for International Affairs of Seoul National University and the Institute of East Asia Studies of Keio University, with the participation of the ANU-Mac Arthur Asia Security Initiative Partnership of the Australian National University. In the face of a rising China and the relative decline of the United States, this seminar was an initiative to assess the changing trends of those middle powers’ policies towards China. A total of 39 students from GSIS, 1 Minister and 15 Professors and Analysts from SNU, Keio University, Australian National University, Griffith University and the National Institute of Defense Studies, Japan, participated in the seminar. The programme also included a live telecast session between 13 SNU and 15 ANU PhD and M.A. students, in which students from both schools also could convey their views on this issue.

  • Shinai Kwon and Reshma Kamath, majoring in International Cooperation

    Two GSIS Students, Shinai Kwon and Reshma Kamath, majoring in International Cooperation, were selected to participate in the Coca-Cola Young Leaders Environment Program (CCYELP) held in Hokkaido, Japan from February 27th-March 3rd, 2012. The program was organized by Coca Cola and the Asian Program for Incubation of Environmental Leaders (APIEL) at the University of Tokyo, and was co-organized by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The students were selected based on their exemplary performance at the 10-day Cambodia Unit held in September 2011, which focused on the Sustainable Development of Cambodia. There were 30 participating students in Masters and PhD courses from universities all over Asia. The CCYELP mainly focused on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiatives for the private sector such as Coca-Cola and local Hokkaido businesses. JICA experts also discussed Project Design methods that are mainly used by public sector agencies for project proposals. After intense group discussions, the students culminated their efforts into project presentations on topics such as water sustainability, watershed conservation, environmental education awareness, etc.

  • CAMPUS Asia Workshop with UT

    The 1st CAMPUS Asia Workshop with the University of Tokyo(UT) was held on March 9 at GL-Room, GSIS.   A total of 17 students, professors, and staff members from UT and 20 students and professors from GSIS participated in the event. During the program, Professor Scott Valentine from the University of Tokyo spoke to the participants about Bolstering Human Capital for Regional Cooperation. Professor Woo-sik Moon from GSIS raised the question of How to address Regional Integration in East Asia. After the discussion, participants moved to the SNU Faculty House where they were treated to a friendly dinner. The UT-GSIS workshop served as an opportunity to activate the recently launched CAMPUS Asia project and raise awareness among students from both universities.   The UT delegation subsequently took off for Beijing to participate in the CAMPUS Asia Workshop with Peking University, scheduled for March 11.

  • 2012 Wine and Cheese Party

    The Wine and Cheese Party of 2012 spring semester was held on March 8th at the Sochon Hall. The event began with Professor Dukgeun Ahn, the Associate Dean of International Affairs, giving welcoming remarks which gave an introduction the school life in GSIS. Many professors and returning students joined the event to meet and welcome the new students. The Student Council provided various kinds of cheese and wine to enrich the event. After the Wine and Cheese Party, professors and students moved to Global House and continued on the festivities with dinner and drinks.

  • Retirement Ceremony for Professor Se-Il Park

    On 29th February, the retirement ceremony for faculty members of Seoul National University was held at Moonhwa Gwan. Professor Se-Il Park of GSIS attended at the ceremony to leave after teaching for 20 years in SNU . GSIS faculty and staff members, including professor Hwy-Chang Moon and professor Dukgeun Ahn, also went to the ceremony and celebrated his retirement.

  • 2012 Spring Commencement Ceremony

    The 2012 Spring Commencement Ceremony for GSIS Doctorate and Masters in International Studies and Masters in International Development Policy was held on February 24, 2012. This year’s Commencement was particularly special in that GSIS rewarded its first Doctorate degree to Mr. Kyung-Han Lim (’08 Int’l Coop.). In addition, a total of 47 Master’s degrees in International Studies - 7 in International Commerce, 17 in International Cooperation, 19 in International Area Studies, and 4 in Korean Studies - and 19 Master’s degrees in International Development Policy were rewarded. In the commencement address, Dean Jin-Hyun Paik spoke to the students about the importance of keeping one’s “balance” amid uncertainties and challenges by maintaining a “dead weight” consisted of one’s core values. At this year’s ceremony, Ms. Nari Yoon (‘09 Int’l Cooperation) delivered the valedictory speech on behalf of the student body. The ceremony was a celebration for all 67 students and their family and friends of their endeavor and achievements at GSIS.
