  • Inauguration Ceremony for Dean Hwy-Chang Moon

     The inauguration ceremony for the new GSIS Dean, Professor Hwy-Chang Moon took place on 24 September. The ceremony was attended by faculty and staff members and students. During his speech, Dean Hwy-Chang Moon thanked every member of GSIS for their contribution and pledged to work for their benefit. Upon presentation of a bouquet of flowers by the student council members, Dean Moon awarded a plaque to former Associate Dean Cheol-Hee Park to thank his hard work for the last two years.

  • Mr. Kyung-wook Hur, Ambassador of Korea to the OECD

    Mr. Kyung-wook Hur, Ambassador of Korea to the OECD, visited GSIS on Friday September 21st and gave a Distinguished Lecture on “Why We Take Development Seriously: The Changing World and Korea’s New Initiative.” The Ambassador stressed the importance of joint efforts among developed and developing countries as well as key international institutions such as OECD and UNDP. He added that Korea strives to be a unique and important actor in the international development scene through programs such as the Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) and pioneering institutions such as the Global Green Growth Institute. After the lecture, Ambassador Hur took a round of questions from the audience and answered them. He concluded the lecture by providing career advice on how to join international organizations and encouraging the students to be keen on these opportunities.

          The Fall 2012 Wine and Cheese Party was held on September 6th at GL lobby, GSIS. The Fall 2012 Wine and Cheese Party was held on September 6th at GL lobby, GSIS. Many students and faculty members attended the event to enjoy the varied selection of wine and cheese served by the Student Council and also to give a warm welcome to the new students. After the Wine and Cheese Party, professors and students moved to Global House and continued the festivities with dinner and drinks.

  • Dorothy J. Solinger, University of California, Irvine

    A Distinguished Lecture titled “China’s New Underclass and Its Consciousness” was held on September 18th at GL-Room, GSIS. Professor Dorothy J. Solinger from University of California spoke about ‘state legitimacy and the New Urban Poor’. She mainly focused on the Minimum Livelihood Guarantee program, launched in 1999, to address the issues on the welfare of the ‘New Urban Poor’. She claimed that a major issue is the extent to which a bond of trust entwines beneficiary and benefactor in their interchange in this welfare sector, the degree to which, that is, the one has faith in the other.

        A Distinguished Lecture titled “U.S.-Korea Relations in the 21st Century” was held on September 18th at Sochon Hall, GSIS. Ambassador Sung Y. Kim, ambassador of the United States to Korea, gave a brief lecture on the relations of U.S. and Korea and the rest was filled with a Q&A session. Over 180 students attended the lecture and they asked about the position of the U.S. in many different events and perspectives.

  • EDCF Campus Talk with Korea EXIM Bank

    On September 12th , Korea EXIM Bank held an information session on campus, “EDCF Campus Talk”, at GL Room, GSIS. Around 30 students who were interested in the field of ODA, both in and out of GSIS attended the event. The session included firstly, brief history and overview of the Bank, and secondly, an informative session on EDCF (Economic Development Cooperation Fund). Lastly, the event was concluded with Q&A session and informative explanation on upcoming events at the Korea EXIM Bank.
