Campus Asia, Field Trip to GyungjuStudents from the Campus Asia Program went on a field trip to Gyungju and Andong from November 14 to 15, 2014. They visited Tumuli Park-Daereungwon, Anapji Pond and Cheomsungdae on the first day. In the afternoon, they visited Gyungju 0-reung (five tombs of Shilla Kings), Seokgulam and Bulguksa. In the pension where they stayed overnight, they had a chance to experience ‘painting on the ceramic’, tea and traditional refreshments. The Campus Asia Program students also visited Andong, where the traditions have been preserved for 600 years.

Japanese Sake is not just Gubota and HatkaisanInstitute for Japanese Studies, SNU has held Japanese Cultural Experience Event of “Japanese Sake is not just Gubota and Hatkaisan” to commemorate the 10th anniversary. Around 40 SNU professors and 10 IJS people took part in this event supported by Japanese Embassy, Public Affairs division. The event provided a chance to learn Japanese Sake culture and have a taste of the rice wine.

From Ramyon to Satellite and the Insurance Company that Deals WorldwideCo-organized by Institute of Japanese Studies, SNU and Seoul Japan Club, Special Lecture Series 6 on Japanese Companies was held on Monday, November 24, 2014. Sugawa Humio, General Manager of Korea Branch Office, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co. gave a presentation on ‘From Ramyon to Satellite, and Insurance Co. which deals worldwide: its establishment and risk management’ Mr. Humio introduced the field of business of the Mitsui Sumitomo, and explained the formation process of the insurance system in students’ eye-level.

Interested in Graduate School?Information session about graduate programs in International Affairs from four international affairs schools was held at International Conference Hall on December 12, 2014. Representatives from School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, School of Advanced International Studies. Johns Hopkins University, The Fletcher School, Tufts University and School of International and Public Affairs from Columbia University were at GSIS to give short presentations of each school and had a general Q & A session. Many students had attended the event to show their interest.

2014 Korean Association for Time Studies ConferenceConference for Korean Time Studies was held on Dec 5th, 2014 in Sochon Hall. Prof. Jonathan Gershuny from Oxford gave presentation on “Time, National Product and Well-being: Extending National Accounts”. Lyn Craig from University of New South Wales, Australia on “Using Time Use Data to Explore Family Life in Context: What do we know, what can we know?”. Prof. Ignace Glorieux from Free University of Brussels, Belgium gave presentation on “Merits, Threats and Future of Time Use Research. Many other scholars in time use study had participated in the conference.

Seminar on the Relations between East Aisa and Latin AmericaThe seminar on “the Relations between East Asia and Latin America” was held at GSIS on December 12th. Mr. Nobuaki Hamaguchi from Kobe University, mentioned the power shift in East Asia resulting in the transition of political stances of Japan toward Latin America. Ms. Guo Jie from Pekin University, explained that China has far to go to build strategic partnership with Latin American countries.

Distinguished Lecture : Where is CSR Going? Current Trends and ChallengesOn November 14th Celina Pagani-Tousignant, the president and founder of Normisur International, gave a lecture titled "Where Is Corporate Social Responsibility –CSR Going? Current Trends and Challenges Ahead.” In her very dynamic lecture, Ms. Pagani explained how CSR has been growing and shared her interesting experiences in CSR area especially in many Latin American countries. She also pointed out several problems CSR is now confronting, suggesting some prospects of it, and answered vehemently to the listeners’ critics emphasizing that the CSR must not concentrate in marketing or image-making, but build a reputation.

The 30th Global Leaders ProgramGSIS, the 30th Members of Global Leadership Program has started its activity as of Commencement Ceremony on September 4, 2014. The program not only fosters Global Leaders with three-dimensional vision for creative and innovative growth but also runs parallel with special programs for friendship activity, such as mountain climbing, domestic workshops and workshops at abroad. The 30th members of GLP students strengthened the communality by participating at the mounting climbing held on September 27th and at the three day oversea workshop, which was held at Weitai, Yantai of China. The special lecture at Shandong University, and visiting historical site of Jang Bog, known as the King of the Sea was also in the program.

GSIS Special Symposium- U.S. Attitudes towards Korea: Growing Support for a Solid RelationshipThe findings of the 2014 Chicago Council Survey of American public opinion and US foreign policy were first revealed last Wednesday, October 29th 2014 at Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), Seoul National University. The forum was co-hosted by Korea Foundation and The Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA), one of the leading independent organizations committed to educating the public and influencing the discourse on global issues through contributions to opinion and policy formation. The most of the Americans continue to favor the use of diplomacy over military options vis-à-vis North Korea. Also, as for the American attitudes towards in dealing with the rise of China, two in three Americans tend to support a friendly cooperation and engagement with China. A panel discussion followed, with Professor Geun Lee from GSIS as moderator. Panels includes Ivo H. Daalder (the President of CCGA), Dina Smelts (the presenter and senior fellow), Professor Dukjin Chang (Center for Social Sciences at SNU) and Professor Taekyoon Kim (GSIS). The forum was a great opportunity to encourage interactions and intellectual exchanges between academics, professionals and students.

GLIMPSE DAYAs part of the GLIMPSE (Global Leaders in Management and Policy in South Korea and Europe) program, an international conference was held by the EU Centre at GSIS under the title "Coping with Regional Conflicts in Asia and in Europe: Achievement and Limits" on October 29th, 2014. Followed by presentations on ESSEC Business School (France) and KU Leuven (Belgium) by their representatives, the conference dealt with the management of regional conflicts in Asia and Europe explored through an interdisciplinary analysis involving economic, political, social and cultural approaches. Four themes were presented to discuss the sources of conflicts and examine how Asia and Europe attempted to resolve them. The conference was a valuable opportunity to further understand Asia and Europe’s particularities and share lessons from Asian and European experiences of conflict management.
