Development Direction and Task of Korea’s Commerce PolicyThe Center for International Commerce & Strategy has prepared “2015 FTA and Trade policy Symposium” on Thursday, 12th November. On this symposium, diverse renowned specialists were invited and shared their views on Korea’s FTA and Trade policy and its prospect. The first session was mainly for the Korea’s FTA and Trade policy, with Prof. Park Tae-ho and Prof. Kim Hyun-jong. In the second session, Prof. Ahn Duk-geun, Prof. Jo Dong-ho and Prof. Lee Seok presented their view on the North – South Koreans’ economic cooperation within WTO system. Prof. Kim Jong-sup., Prof. Hur-Yun and Doctor Lee Siwook shared their thought on the relation between FTA commerce policy and developmental cooperation. In the last session, Prof. Choi, Byong-il, Prof. Jung Inkyo, and Doctor Seo JinKyo suggested the Korea’s future FTA policy. Many students, officials and journalists attended the symposium.

Pros and Cons of TPPOn November, 12th, 2015, the professor Alan V. Deardorff from the department of economics, the Michigan University gave a lecture about “Pros and Cons of Trans-Pacific Partnership”. He described TPP as a “living agreement” as there have been a lot of debate whether a specific country join TPP. He explained the overall contents of TPP agreement and what might be behind the curtains of TPP. He also indicated that Japan’s participation changed the characteristics of TPP. He mentioned that TPP will make US to be able to write the rules for the international trading system. He explained the seven parts of TPP, and glanced who will gain and lose .

Current State of Play of Multilateral Trade Negotiations and Its ChallengesOn November, 4th, 2015, Ambassador Seokyung Choi from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gave a lecture to the students in the FTA Commerce and Strategy program on the topic of “Current State of Play of Multilateral Trade Negotiations and Its Challenges”. He explained the overview history of GATT/WTO and the current state of the WTO negotiations which are facing Nairobi meeting right ahead in this year. As he worked in the council for trade in services, he explained in details about how WTO negotiations are in process. He indicated the 4 obstacles WTO program is facing: Disagreement on Triangular issues, difference of level ambition, deficit of trust and distraction to plurilaterals.

A Latin Managing Global CompanyOn October 14, 2015, special lecture entitled “A Latin Managing Global Company in Korea” hosted by SNU GSIS, organized by SNU Institute of Latin American Studies (SNUILAS) and Brazil Cultural Center in Korea, and supported by Doosan Infracore was held at International Conference Hall, GSIS, SNU. The lecture was given by Sergio Rocha who is the president and CEO of GM Korea Company. A number of students from GSIS to different departments such as Business Administration, as well as faculties and many more took their time to attend Mr. Rocha’s lecture, and later led a fruitful discussion by asking some insightful questions. As a passionate Brazilian having worked in different cultures, Mr. Rocha shared stories on diverse topics from his management philosophy to future strategy all of which revolved around the global company he heads. He especially emphasized the importance of building concrete relationships with customers as well as suppliers and fostering ingenuity. A combination of competitiveness and sustainability was suggested as the company’s future key agenda in order to booster growth as well as to better integrate in the Korean culture. Furthermore, Mr. Rocha discussed challenges in Korean economy related to rigid labor market, asserting that the society should place more importance on meritocracy and gender equality

The Research Seminar of the Yulchon-GSIS Center for Emerging EconomicsOn September 14th 2015, the Yulchon-GSIS Center for Emerging Economies held its first research seminar. Team Cambodia presented on topic “Comparison of the Effects on Cambodia Income Growth between FDI and ODA”. Team Vietnam presented on topic “Unemployment Insurance in Vietnam”. Team Indonesia I and II each presented on topics “Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards in Indonesia” and “The Prospect of Indonesia-Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement”. Each team has received feedbacks from lawyers of the Yulchon LLC. Further plan is to revise the research in accordance with the feedbacks by the mid October.

The forum was held under the topic, Trend of Private Participation in Development Cooperation and Future Prospect on. Participants from academia related to International Development Cooperation, domestic development related NGOs, participating companies from CSR activity, international organization such as UN, Habitat had participated. The 2nd Global PPP Forum was planned to diagnose the private participation trend and prospect the future in the field of International Development Cooperation on September 15, 2015 at International Conference Hall, GSIS.

Latin America’s Sports and NationalismProfessor Robert Irwin gave a lecture about the direction of the varied cultural study and interdisciplinary research method in general term, which sports research implies under the title “Latin America’s Sports and Nationalism”. He explained how sports was introduced to Latin America through the imperialistic governing process and enumerated some misused cases of sports in some countries as to its political needs. Particularly, the US Latino Sports star was mentioned as a clear means of expressing antagonistic emotions among the white supremacy and Mexican-American ethno-nationalism. Professor Irwin pointed out that due to the fact that sports is an area where hidden prejudice and power between social citizenship and racism virtually clashes, it is needed to further develop the cultural studies in the future. The series of lecture was organized by the Institute of Latin American Study.

FTA Business and Commerce Strategy Seminar 14 :Evaluation on Korea-US`s Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement NegotiationOn September 24th, 2015, the ambassador from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hyun Cho gave a lecture to the students in the FTA Commerce and Strategy program on ‘Evaluation on Korea-US`s Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement Negotiation.’ Nuclear power is the enormous source of the global governance, and Amb. Cho explained the background knowledge of the nuclear regime with the three concepts: Nuclear security, nuclear safety and nuclear safeguard. According to his lecture, nuclear power has diverse potential not only for nuclear weapon, but also for cancer treatment, marine ecosystem investigation and electricity production. He explained the Korea-US negotiating situation compared with the two positions. There were three main assignments as the negotiating representative of Korea-US negotiation. The academia, nuclear industry and the media. He emphasized that through the whole procedure of negotiation, the activities outside the negotiation are truly influential. And he evaluated that the negotiation would be the another important pillar of Korea- US cooperation

The 31st Commencement of GSIS Global Leaders ProgramThe 31st Global Leaders Program of Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University held commencement ceremony on September 3rd at Mugunghwa Hall, Hoam Faculty House. Fifty eight (58) global leaders have accomplished the program. The 31st GLP graduates had not only the most number of graduates but also the most number of leaders were rewarded. The 32nd Global Leaders Program is making steady progress to introduce Korea’s top leaders and professionals to a theoretical and practical perspective on the most current Korean trade environment and business trends. GLP at GSIS, SNU is composed of various functional study programs including International Area Studies, and Cultural Relevancy Programs to foster Global Leaders.
