A former Prime Minister of Italy, Enrico Letta, “Future of EU Integration between Brexit and Grexit.”On May 30th, 2016, dean of Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) of Sciences Po and a former Prime Minister of Italy, Enrico Letta gave a lecture to SNU students on the timely topic of “Future of EU Integration between Brexit and Grexit.” Following Prof. Taeho Bark’s introductory remarks, Professor Letta began the lecture by introducing the paths of European integration in various aspects as political, social, and economic development. He mentioned that big values are shared by the European integration and the Asian community which calls for more active cooperation between Europe and Asia. Along with this message, Professor Letta also shed a light on many challenges faced by Europe as one can infer from the Brexit debate and upcoming referendum. After sharing his thoughts on the future of European integration, he concluded with a strong message: trust formation through multilateralism and abandonment of nationalism is most important in order to sole the roots of these issues and global challenges faced by today’s world.

Field Trip to Asan Hyundai Motors and Dangjin Hyundai Steel Co.On Friday, May 13, 2016, the 8th Members of DCPP students went to a field trip to Asan Hyundai Motors and Dangjin Hyundai Steel Co. The students had opportunity to view the driving force of economic growth in Korea and learn from so called, “the global companies”. Students have learned how Korea has leaped up from developing countries to developed countries with the automobile and steel Industries by becoming self-reliant in steel industries. As a government officer of a nation, the students think that they would be able to encourage their government to support the industrial developing policy and to boost the collaboration between their industry and Korean business companies.

FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series 6: Won-Dollar(?/$) Exchange Rate and the Trade Pressure of USOn May 24th, 2016, senior researcher Dongsoo Kang from KDI gave a lecture to the students of the FTA Commerce and Strategy program under the topic, “Won-Dollar Exchange Rate and the Trade Pressure of the US.” Senior researcher Kang shortly explained what exchange rate is and how exchange rate trend changes over time. By showing Korea’s balance of trade by each country and by introducing “Bennet-Hatch-Carper”, he explained how the Department of the Treasury of the US imposes trade pressure to countries using these methods. Along with the assessment for the exchange rate, he concluded with three advices: the need of transparency improvement, trust formation by securing macro-prudential, and enlargement of foreign-exchange market.

FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series 5: Seok Young Choi’s FTA Negotiation NoteOn May 23rd, 2016, Ambassador Seok Young Choi from GSIS, SNU gave a lecture to students of the Graduate School of International Studies under the topic, “Seok Young Choi’s FTA Negotiation Note,” which is his recently-published book. Ambassador Choi and three specialists from each field were on the penal: Professor Yoon Heo from the GSIS, Sogang University, Prof.Byung-il Choi from the GSIS, Ewha Women’s University, and Prof.Jung-bin Lim from College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, SNU. Each specialist shared how they viewed the book and asked questions about the US Beef Protest in South Korea and agriculture protection in FTA Negotiations.

Seoul National University-Pukyong National University Joint Seminar in BusanThe FTA Commerce and Strategy Program held a joint seminar with Pukyong National University in Busan on May 13th, 2016. Professor Dukgeun Ahn and 22 FTA Commerce & Strategy Program participants went to the Busan Customs to join the seminar. In the session I, Mr. Wontaek Ryu, the Director of a Customs Bureau, the Busan Customs, overviewed about the roles and functions of the Busan Customs. In the session II, the presenters of SNU GSIS gave a presentation under the topic of “KORUS FTA and Pharmaceutical Patent”, while Hyunjin Lee from Pukyong National University presented on topic of “The Change in Contents Industry Export after Korea-China FTA.”

FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series 4: Technical Standards and International Trade SystemOn May 12th, 2016, Min-jung Kim from KDI School of Public Policy and Management gave a lecture to the students in the FTA Commerce and Strategy Program under the topic, “Technical Standards and International Trade System.” Kim explained what TBT (Technical Barriers to Trade) is, and how TBT disputes are being resolved based on WTO agreements. She also introduced her new research about what the concept “standards” is in the WTO TBT Agreement, which she is working on. By comparing the concept in the GATT/WTO regulations, she concludes that clear legal criteria is strongly needed.

Zeroing Debate, Balance of Power, and the Expected Change of Practice in the US.On April 19th, 2016, Jong-sun Shim, a CPA from Samjong KPMG gave a lecture to the students of the FTA Commerce and Strategy Program under the topic, “Zeroing Debate, Balance of Power, and the Expected Change of Practice in the US.” Shim explained what dumping and target dumping are and how the United States calculate dumping margin depending on situations. He also introduced several methodologies for zeroing like Nail's test and Cohen's d test.

Public-private Relationships in Trade Policy-makingOn April 5th, 2016, Hyun-jung JE from KITA gave a lecture to the students of the FTA Commerce and Strategy Program under the topic, “Public-private Relationships in Trade Policy-making.” Ms. Je explained what the background for public-private relationships is in trade policy-making by showing three categories at the domestic level, which were Transparency, Consultation, and Participation. She emphasized that in the process of concluding a trade-treaty in Korea, it is necessary to include public hearings and that Korea is not yet in the stage of consultation, but naming as “Transition-to-Consultation.”
