  • The 9th global gathering for Euro-Asia Summer School

    The Euro-Asia Summer School celebrated its 9th global gathering in Seoul/Sejong (Seoul National University / KDI School of Public Policy and Management) and Leuven, Belgium (KU Leuven) from August 21st to September 1st. The Euro-Asia Summer School is an annually-held summer program co-organized by the EU Center at Seoul National University GSIS, and is a key opportunity for young talents to meet and interact to facilitate inter-cultural dialogues on global governance. This year, about 30 students were selected from the three universities, and these young talents were able to meet and interact and therefore to facilitate inter-cultural dialogues on global governance under this year’s topic ‘Political and Economic Cooperation between EU and Asia.’ Through lectures, discussions, and high-level conferences, they were given the opportunity to explore global governance – how state, regional, and international relations, along with foreign and trade policies of the EU and Asia and their global partners can overcome internal challenges and foster a worldwide cooperation. A range of global challenges were discussed, such as integration processes, multilateral cooperation, and perceptions of the EU and Asia in the global scene.

  • The 34th International Development Policy Seminar

    The 34th International Development Policy Seminar was held last Thursday, September 14th at the GL Room of GSIS. The lecture entitled, “Public Management for International Development” was presented by Dr. Changyong Choi, the current chair of the MPP Program at KDI School of Public Policy and Management. The lecture was attended by the 10th batch of DCPP students, Professor Hyeok Jeong, and 11 graduate students from different departments. The Q&A session after the seminar was filled with hot debate, with students throwing out questions to each other and conducting intense debate on the future of international development.

  • The 38th Commencement of GSIS, SNU

    The 38th Commencement of the Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University was held on August 29th, 2017 at the Socheon Convention Hall. The graduates included sixty seven (67) Masters in International Studies and two Ph.D. students in International Studies. Professor Cheol Hee Park, dean of GSIS, SNU, extended his congratulations to the graduates on successfully completing their degrees. Professor Young-kwan Yoon, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, gave a congratulatory speech, urging the graduates to stay informed and active in their respective fields. The valedictorian speech was given by Benedikt Büchel, who graduated as the valedictorian of International Area Studies.

  • Toyota Signed Renewal Contract with GSIS

    Graduate School of International Studies, SNU renewed the program with Toyota Motor Korea on September 6, 2017. The renewal contract was signed by dean Park Cheol-hee and Akihisa Yoshida, president of Toyota Motor Korea. Under the agreement, Toyota Motor Korea will donate two hundred and ten million Korean Won to GSIS over a period of three years as part of its social contribution program. The donation will be used for the "Asia and the World" public lecture series, policy-oriented seminars and other academic programs to help students enhance their understanding of East Asia.

  • The 35th GLP Graduation Ceremony held on August 24th

    The 35th Seoul National University Global Leadership Program (hereafter "GLP") concluded with a graduation ceremony on August 24th, 2017. The 35th GLP cohort was composed of 55 students from diverse professional backgrounds. Registered students included corporate managers of major electronics producers, board members of public companies such as Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea International Trade Association, and professionals from various other fields. The 35th GLP members attended a total of 24 lectures, the first of which was Professor Taeho Park's lecture on "Korean Trade and FTA Policies". The lectures, given over a period of six months, were composed of practical academic courses, international area studies courses, and cultural understanding courses which provided a multidimensional perspective on the Korean business environment.  The program also held several domestic and international workshops and other special events which provided opportunities for networking and building better relations.   • GSIS signs MOU with Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC)

    Graduate School of International Studies,  SNU has signed a MOU with JDC (Jeju Free International City Development Center) on July 18, 2017.  The MOU was signed to reinforce business cooperation capabilities and to expand networks for possible investment.  Under the agreement, GSIS, SNU will share its internal and external network with JDC and lend its international professional experience to help with the building of Jeju Free International City.  Through the MOU, GSIS plans to cooperate with the JDC to facilitate professional training for international business promotion as well as carry out policy consultation and research on internationalization.  According to a spokesperson for SNU, "An operating committee will be organized separately in order to develop Jeju Island as a premier island of peace and prosperity". Additionally, various business cooperative initiatives will be take place both annually and regularly.

    On June 8th 2017, the Yulchon-GSIS Center for Emerging Economies held a special lecture. Mr. Young-mok Kim, former president of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), gave a lecture on the subject: “Changing Global Environment for Development and the Direction of Korea’s ODA Policies." Lawyers from Yulchon as well as many of the GSIS students and professors participated in the lecture to listen to his experience and expertise in the development cooperation field.

  • [Campus Asia] Evolving Regionalism in East Asia

    On May 31st, Special lecture was made under the title of “Evolving regionalism in East Asia”, was given by professor Jaewoo-Choo of Kyunghee University. Campus Asia students attended the lecture and spent a great time understanding power constellation, Asia paradox and the dynamics of East Asia countries’ evolving history especially about the responses that China, Japan and Korea has been made. Professor Choo emphasis the importance of ideological similarities that East Asian countries have, and that the power constellation will prevail in East Asia, but on the global scale it won’t for a while and they will manage to find ways to be cooperative. From this lecture, students could understand the whole process of regional institutions in East Asia and what could be the solution or important factors in this regionalized era.

  • The BESETO intellectual Dialogue 2017

     On May 30th, the BESETO intellectual Dialogue 2017 was held in GSIS of Seoul National University. The signing ceremony of the Campus Asia Financial Agreement was held ahead of the 20th anniversary of the opening of SNU, GSIS. The dialogue was held under the theme of "How to deepen the academic cooperation in East Asia". In the dialogue, a variety of academic and educational cooperation plans were discussed based on experiences of Campus Asia, the pan-Asian educational cooperation project,. Which involvies three universities, bilateral, multilateral academic exchanges between SNU, Tokyo University and Peking University. In particular, the future vision of each university toward the East Asian knowledge community was explained by the graduate schools of SNU, UT, and PU.
