Campus Asia Field Trip to Jeonju

Students participating in the Campus Asia winter program had a great time visiting Jeonju for 2 days on February 1st and 2nd, where Korean tradition is still alive. In Jeonju, students had time to recall the past of Korea, centering on Han-ok Village. On the first day, students went to Han-ok Village to experience making Korean traditional crafts and natural soap while wearing traditional clothes of Korea. On the second day, students had time to learn traditional folk music and musical instruments and to explore Jeonju's traditional market. And of course, students could fully enjoy lots of Jeonju’s specialty foods such as Jeonju Bibimbap. Students surely felt the beauty of traditions in Korea during this two-day trip.

Campus Asia Students, Field Trip to Jeju Island

From December 20 to 22 of 2017, Campus Asia students went on their final three-day trip to Jeju Island. The students visited Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), Soesokkak Beach, Jeju Folk Village, Water Circus, K-Pop Museum, and The Ma Park. As one of the Korea’s most representative tour site, Jeju Island is filled with natural sites such as Seopji Koji or Mt. Hanla, as well as man-made entertainments such as Love Museum, Eco Land, and Jungmun Tour Area. The students were most attracted by the unique architectures of Jeju Folk Village as they showed distinction from ordinary Folk Village. Moreover, the Island was filled with nature that is incomparable to one in Seoul and indigenous food such as Jeju style noodle, Heukdoeji (Jeju Pork), and various seafood. Through the Jeju Island trip, students acquired deeper knowledge about Korea by exploring the area distant from the mainland Korea.

On November 24th, the 4th National Research Paper Competition of FTA Business Program was held at Inha University. Around 100 professors, specialists and students from the seven program-running universities (Chosun University, Chungnam National University, Inha University, Kyungpook National University, Pukyong National University, Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan University) attended the event, where selected graduate students competed with their research papers and presentations. Campus Asia: Final Presentation

On December 13th, the Campus Asia students had a final presentation. First presentation was about 'Aging society and environmental problems caused by rapid economic development in three East Asian countries'.  Second presentation was about how the perspective of 'death' in Korea, China, and Japan was different from each other. There was a background situation in which a difference in religious culture and understanding. In particular, they explained the difference between the way of burial and the way of mourning that are included in these systems, along with interesting points. Third presentation’s theme was "Comparative study on the idol", "Culture between China, Japan and Korea". The students explained each idol industry in Korea, China, and Japan and their characteristics,  Final presentation was about the 'Pension system and its problems in rapid aging societies: China, Japan and Korea'. The students explained the current state of the national pension and the private pension. It is well explained that the three East Asian countries have major problems such as the sudden entry into the aging society, the debt of the pension system resulting from them, and the situation of the pensioner who is inferior to the pensioner in the future.

The 9th Batch of DCPP Commencement

The commencement of the 9th batch of the DCPP (Development Cooperation Policy Program) was held last December 13, 2017 at the Socheon hall of SNU GSIS. The event was participated by 12 graduates and their family and friends. Four congratulatory speeches by the H. E. Ambassador Oscar Herrera Gilbert (Embassy of Ecuador), H. E. Ambassador Long Dimanche (Embassy of Cambodia), H. E. Ambassador Rahim Hayat Qureshi (Embassy of Pakistan), and H. E. Ambassador Thura U Thet Oo Maung (Embassy of the Union of Myanmar) were followed by the Dean’s Speech by Professor and Dean Dean Cheol Hee Park and the Academic Report by the director of DCPP, Professor Hyeok Jeong. Moreover, Mr. Shahid Ijaz Tazar from Pakistan was awarded with the Academic Excellence Award and Mr. Vincent Ishimwe from Rwanda was awarded the Distinguished Thesis Award.

The 36th International Development Policy Seminar

The 36th International Development Policy Seminar was held Friday, November 24th at the GSIS International Conference Hall. The lecture entitled, “Lay Public Participation in Health Policy Formulation” was presented by Prof. Juhwan Oh, the current professor of International Health Policy and Management at Seoul National University, College of Medicine. The lecture was attended by the 9th and 10th batch of DCPP students, visiting professor Byung Oung, and 2 graduate students from different departments. It was great opportunity to understand the health policy and the public policy participation for the students who do not have the background knowledge of them. After the seminar, students gave feedback and hotly debated on the topic with public policy and lay public participation of their own countries.

Issues and Perspectives Seminar: Prospects after the November Trump-Moon Summit

On December 7, 2017, SNU GSIS invited Mr. Edwin C. Sagurton Jr, minister-counselor for political affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, to speak at on Issues and Perspectives Seminar. Sponsored by Toyota Motor Korea, the Issues and Perspectives Seminar series put on by SNU GSIS in order to discuss timely policy issues. In the seminar, Mr.Sagurton touched on next steps for the U.S.-ROK alliance including: Addressing the challenge of North Korea’s nuclear and missile program, strengthening the security alliance and defense capabilities, and expanding United States-Republic of Korea economic, trade, and investment ties.

Special Lecture by Professor Jong-Ho JEONG

In 2nd semester of 2017 Professor Jong-ho Jeong, the recipient of the SNU Education Award, held a special lecture on December 5, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Center for Teaching and Learning. Professor Jeong lectured on “Seoul National University’s Vision and Strategy for Global Education” The lecture was composed of not only students and professors from GSIS, but also from other departments as well. Together they deliberated on the future global education of Seoul National University. The‘SNU Educational Award’ is awarded to ten professors each semester, selected by students, colleagues and members of the university for the quality of their lecturing, student guidance and other educational activities. Professor Jeong was especially recognized for his contribution to Globalizing SNU’s education, by being responsible for initiating, designing and operating the‘SNU in the World’ Program. Professor Jeong greatly developed the university’s global perspective. Upon receiving the award, Professor Jeong donated half of the prize money to GSIS to support future education and business research programs. Finally, the professor hopes that the award encourages further development of new and existing GSIS programs.

The 17th Undergraduate/Graduate Trade Thesis Competition

The Korea International Trade Association and Korea Economic Daily co-sponsored the 17th Undergraduate/Graduate Trade Thesis Competition Award on November 30, 2017 at Samsung-dong Trade Tower. Na-Yung KIM of Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University won the first prize. Kim’s thesis focuses on threats to various export fields and identifies food and drug exports as the sector with the highest risk.  The theme of the awards ceremony was “Reform of Korea’s Trade and Change of Global Trade Environment Counter Strategy”. Young-Ju KIM, Chairman of the Korea International Trade Association, awarded the grand prize to IvyCOM, the name of Na-Yung Kim’s team. Chairman Kim encouraged the winners of the contest and urged them to always, "be concerned with the world economy and Korea’s trade so that Korean trade policy can actively respond to changes in the world trade environment”.  This is the third time Na-Yung KIM has won the prize this semester.  She had won the 1st prize at ‘the 2nd Research Paper Competition in Technical Barriers to Trade’ and also at the '18th Research Paper Competition on the Trade Remedy System' which was held on Nov. 3rd.
