[Campus Asia] Evolving Regionalism in East Asia

On May 31st, Special lecture was made under the title of “Evolving regionalism in East Asia”, was given by professor Jaewoo-Choo of Kyunghee University. Campus Asia students attended the lecture and spent a great time understanding power constellation, Asia paradox and the dynamics of East Asia countries’ evolving history especially about the responses that China, Japan and Korea has been made. Professor Choo emphasis the importance of ideological similarities that East Asian countries have, and that the power constellation will prevail in East Asia, but on the global scale it won’t for a while and they will manage to find ways to be cooperative. From this lecture, students could understand the whole process of regional institutions in East Asia and what could be the solution or important factors in this regionalized era.

The BESETO intellectual Dialogue 2017

 On May 30th, the BESETO intellectual Dialogue 2017 was held in GSIS of Seoul National University. The signing ceremony of the Campus Asia Financial Agreement was held ahead of the 20th anniversary of the opening of SNU, GSIS. The dialogue was held under the theme of "How to deepen the academic cooperation in East Asia". In the dialogue, a variety of academic and educational cooperation plans were discussed based on experiences of Campus Asia, the pan-Asian educational cooperation project,. Which involvies three universities, bilateral, multilateral academic exchanges between SNU, Tokyo University and Peking University. In particular, the future vision of each university toward the East Asian knowledge community was explained by the graduate schools of SNU, UT, and PU.

Campus Asia, Field Trip to Jeonju

On May 26th ~ 27th, 2017, a group of 9 students from the Campus Asia Program enjoyed two-day field trip in Jeonju.  They visited Han-ok maeul, the Korean traditional housing place to stay, which includes Geong-gi jeon and Omok-dae. As an experience, they enjoyed rail biking while watching beautiful sceneries of Jeonju, made night stand with dried flower and Han-ji, the Korean traditional paper. They also participated making rice cake and enjoyed delicious hand-made rice cake. They experienced Han-bok, the Korean traditional clothing and went to many places inside the traditional village. During the trip, they enjoyed delicious and traditional foods of Jeonju, including Jeonju bibimbap and Tteok-gal bi. During the trip, they experienced the essence of traditional area of Korea, learn about the life style.

Campus Asia Second Field Trip in Seoul

On April 28th, 2017, a group of 9 students from the Campus Asia Program enjoyed one-day field trip in Seoul. The tight schedule was full of popular tourist’s spots in Seoul. They visited Cheong Gye Cheon Museum to learn about the past, present and future of Cheonggyecheon and the changing face of the city. After that, they walked along the Cheonggyecheon to Gyeongbokgung Palace to attend the 3rd Royal Culture Festival. They enjoyed various exhibitions and performances such as Hanbok Photo Exhibition and Korean Traditional Music Concert. Also they went to Jogyesa to celebrate Lantern Festival for Buddha’s birthday and Insa-dong Street to experience focal point of Korean traditional culture and crafts.

Professor Dukgeun Ahn awarded SNU Education Award

Prof. Ahn Dukgeun has been awarded the Spring 2017 SNU Education Award. The SNU Education Award is given to faculty members who exhibit outstanding capability in education and student guidance. The award is given to only 10 faculty members each semester.  Along with the award, Professor Ahn was credited with receiving the best lecture evaluations each semester. Additionally, Professor Ahn was recognized for developing and advancing the GSIS curriculum as well as for providing students with excellent academic advice. Professor Ahn's acceptance of the award was especially noteworthy as it marked the first time a GSIS professor had been selected as a recipient. Reflecting on this, Professor Ahn expressed his wish to share his success with all of GSIS, saying that “the award was given not only to myself". In a selfless act, the professor offered half of the award (KRW10,000,000) to GSIS as a development fund for educational research.  To commemorate Professor Ahn's acceptance of the award, GSIS held a special lecture on May 17, 2017. The lecture focused on Professor Ahn's academic passion and was titled "Academic Development of International Commerce and Current Challenges in the World Trading System”.

Japan's Security Policy in Changing World System

On May 25th, 2017, Tanaka, Akihiko, the president of National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, gave a special lecture on “Japan’s Security Policy in Changing World System.” In the lecture, he not only discusses the characteristics of the changing world system and the specific features of East Asian within the world system, but also analyzed the evolution of Japan’s security policy. He explained that the ambivalent nature of East Asian international relations, characterized by both economic prosperity and geopolitical tensions, has shaped and fostered the evolution of Japan’s security policy since the end of the Cold War. He argues that while there have been many changes in the legal frameworks of Japan’s security policy and the Self Defense Forces, these changes are taking place within the framework of its alliance with the US and at the backdrop of still significant pacifist sentiments.

On May 2nd, 2017, Dr Lucio Esposito, associate professor in Development Economics, University of East Anglia, UK, gave a lecture in International Development Policy Seminar on “Inequality, Education and Health: Theory and Empirical“. He gave a presentation on Inequality and social outcome, with evidence on inequality school enrolment in Mexico, inequality to relative deprivation (RD) and relative satisfaction (RS), RD and school enrolment in Mexico, RD, RS and mental health in Mexico. Students were given the chance to discuss various relevant topics with the Associate Professor about inequality in developing countries and its implication on education and health outcomes as well as policy related considerations.
