On October 31st 2017, the 4th FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series was held at SNU GSIS (GL Room). Professor Dukguen Ahn delivered a lecture to the FTA Commerce and Strategy program students about “The Issues and Status of the International Trade System.” Professor Ahn mainly discussed the challenges of the NAFTA and KORUS FTA renegotiations. He also responded to multiple questions by the students, particularly concerning the prospective approach of the South Korean government under the current circumstances.

Campus Asia Field Trip to Busan

On October 27, 2017, Campus Asia students went on a two-day field  trip to Busan, the second largest city and the largest port in South Korea. The students visited numerous tourist sites, including Taejongdae, Haeundae Beach, Busan Aquarium, Yong-Gung Temple, and Gamcheon Art Village. They also tried Korean hweh (raw fish), famous Busan delicacy.  Students spent a memorable timegetting to know each other, discussing their experiences with Campus Asia program as well as their views on the cultural differences between China, Japan, and Korea. Through this field trip, Campus Asia students got to know more about Korea and its rich culture.

Asia and the World Series: Special Lecture by Dr. Hahm, Chaibong

On October 30, 2017, Dr. Chaibong HAHM, president of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, gave a special lecture on “The Origins of the Liberal International Order in Northeast Asia and the New Cold War.” In the lecture, he argued that the historic window of opportunity for economic development and regional integration that Northeast Asia has enjoyed for the past 50 years is closing. Highlighting the importance of the liberal international order in Northeast Asia in the past,  he urged audience members to question what made that liberal order possible in the first place.  After reviewing the ways in which the international order is being presently undermined, Dr. Hahm spoke of the importance of, and methods for, its preservation.

Commencement of International Security Strategy Program

On October 26, 2017, the International Security Strategy Program of the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) held a commencement for 37 executive students from the Ministry of National Defense and other related public and private organizations. During the event, Dean of GSIS, PARK, Cheol-Hee and the alumni president, Mr. HWANG, Jong Young, gave congratulatory remarks. The faculty of ISSP, associate dean, AHN, Dukgeun and Professor SHEEN, Seongho participated and congratulated the ISSP graduates for the efforts during last 15 weeks of the program. The graduates established an alumni association with Mr. MA, Myungwook serving as the second president of the association.  The ISSP is an executive program specializing in international security studies and encompasses conventional military security as well as contemporary human security issues. The program is expected to continue meeting the demands of policy cycles and will continue to produce experts of international security studies. The admission process for next year’s program is expected to begin on May of next year.

The 35th International Development Policy Seminar

The 35th International Development Policy Seminar was held on Thursday, October 26th at the GSIS International Conference Room. The lecture entitled, “Transition and Unification: Human Capital in the Unification of the Two Koreas,” was presented by Professor Byung-Yeon Kim, a current professor at the Department of Economics,  Seoul National University. The lecture was attended by the 9th and 10th batch of DCPP students, Professor Hyeok Jeong, and 20 graduate students from different departments. The students were able to familiarize themselves with the unification process of Germany and examine the possibility of unification of the two Koreas. The Q&A session was full of debate over the possibility of unification and the possible implications for the Korean peninsula.

The 3rd FTA Commerce Strategy Seminar held on October 10th

On October 10, 2017, the 3rd FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series was held at International Conference Hall, SNU GSIS. Professor Yoon Heo from GSIS of Sogang University gave a lecture to the students on the topic, “An Imbalanced Society: a Memorable Past”. Professor Heo explained about the imbalances in the Korean society using the candlelight vigils due to the mad cow disease during the Korea-US FTA negotiation as a prime example. He also responded to multiple questions by the students, especially concerning the influence of the broadcast system and their possible implications on the impending government policies.

CHAMP Holds its Entrance Ceremony

The 4th Seoul National University Graduate School of International Studies China Advanced Management Program (hereafter “CHAMP”) held its entrance ceremony on September 13th, 2017. The 4th CHAMP is underway with thirty five (35) participants.  CHAMP was created with the goal to change domestic businessmen and leaders’ perspectives on China through an interdisciplinary and systematic curriculum that covers Chinese economy, business, politics, foreign relations, history, and culture.   Furthermore, CHAMP is a program that tries to find the answers for creating Chinese business opportunities and building mutually beneficial relations with the Chinese people through social gatherings which include domestic and overseas workshops and other special programs.

Campus Asia Field Trip in Seoul

On September 29th, 2017, 11 students from the Campus Asia Program joined in the one-day Seoul tour. They first visited Buk-Chon Dongyang Munhwa Museum which is small, but contained numerous displays that was inherited from different ancient civilizations, from Buddhist statues from ancient India, China, and the surrounding countries to Korean indigenous drawings. After a nice meal in Korean Hanshik restaurant, they visited the vicinity of Chadeokgung Palace, including Seoul Museum of Art which mainly held three unique exhibitions: Self-evolving City, the Art of Dissonance, and the Folk art. Moreover, they watched a Korean traditional music and dance performance in Chongdong Theatre. The performance, Lotus Flower, was unique in that the plot and the romance was easily understood by the spectators without any script. For the finale, the tour was concluded with Han River Park in Yeouido, where the students were able to view the modern Korean people’s leisure activities.

Judge Jin-Hyun Paik, elected as President of the ITLOS

Judge Jin-Hyun Paik has been elected as President of the ITLOS (International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea) for the 2017-2020 term.  Members of the Tribunal elected Judge Paik to this position on October 2, 2017.  President Paik has served as a member of the Tribunal since 2009.  In accordance with the rules of the Tribunal, the President is elected for a period of three years and may be re-elected.  As president, Judge Paik will preside at all meetings of the Tribunal, direct its work and supervise its administration.  He will represent the Tribunal in its relations with sovereign states and over entities and is required by the Statute of the Tribunal to reside permanently at the seat of the Tribunal in Hamburg. The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) is an intergovernmental organization created by the mandate of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. It was established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, signed at Montego Bay, Jamaica, on December 10, 1982. The Convention entered into force on November 16, 1994, and established an international framework for law over "all ocean space, its uses and resources". The tribunal is based in Hamburg, Germany. The Convention also established the International Seabed Authority, with responsibility for the regulation of seabed mining beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. There are currently 167 signatories, 166 states plus the European Union.  The Jurisdiction is composed of twenty one (21) judges, and seven (7) new judges are elected confidentially, every three (3) years.  Each judge has tenure of nine (9) years.

The 36th batch of the Global Leadership Program (GLP) of Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) at Seoul National University (SNU) has just began, with the opening ceremony held in the International Conference room at GSIS on September 14th 2017. Included in this batch, are a total of forty CEOs and professionals of leading multi-national corporations, public enterprises, and small-medium enterprises in various fields. GLP is a long-established program at GSIS that has been ran for the last 18 years, since starting in November, 1999.
