In his lecture, he discussed the root causes of the current financial crisis and drew normative prescription for the financial markets in the US and in Korea.

Mr. Rudiger Wolfrum, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the SeaOn June 3rd, Mr. Rudiger Wolfrum, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, visited GSIS and gave a lecture titled "Dispute Settlement before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea". In his lecture, President Wolfrum gave an overview of the dispute settlement mechanism before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. He also talked about the jurisprudence of the Tribunal and the potential use of the Tribunal.

Mr. Mohammed Bedjaoui, Former President InternatioMr. Mohammed Bedjaoui, Former President of International Court of Justice and Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria visited GSIS for a distinguished lecture, titled "United Nations Reform (La Reforme des Nations Unies)" on May 19th. In his lecture, he mentioned UN reform should search for peace, development and dignity. He also pointed out the existing problems in UNSC, and for UN to be successful in reform, overcome the egoism would be the first thing to do.

Korea-Japan FTA: Current Issues and ProspectsOn May 16th, a symposium titled, “Korea-Japan FTA: Current Issues and Prospects” was convened at Sochun Conference Hall, GSIS. During four hours, Professor Fukagawa from Waseda University and researcher Jung, Jae Hwa from Korea International Trade Association (KITA) presented their views on the past, present, and future of Korea – Japan FTA, and four discussants shared their opinions and comments on two presentations with the audience.

Amb. Sakutaro Tanino "Public Lecture"On April 24th, Ambassador Sakutaro Tanino, former Ambassador of Japan to China and India, visited GSIS for the public lecture series, "Asia and the World." During two hours, he gave a lecture titled, " Recent Development in East Asia and Japan’s Foreign Policy toward the Region." In his lecture, Ambassador Tanino pointed out various aspects of East Asian region such as strong nationalism, historical issues, and territorial disputes between countries. He also emphasized that historical issues between Japan and other East Asian countries should be resolved upon Japan's active contribution to the region's economic development and security issues, while stressing the importance of Japan - Korea relation.

Excellence Award at the graduate student trade thesis competitionFour GSIS students won the excellence prize at the graduate student trade thesis competition held by the Korea International Trade Association and the Korea Economic Daily. Ms.Junghee Kim, Ms.Seonmin Lee, Ms.Mira Jeong, and Ms.Haihong Zheng, gathered under the team name of Yiyonghoosaeng(利用厚生), wrote a thesis titled "Promoting Export through Process Examination of Transnationalization of Corporations" under the supervision of Prof. Chong-Sup Kim.

Dr. Richard Bush, Brookings InstitutionOn December 5th, Dr. Richard Bush, Director of Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies, the Brookings Institution, visited GSIS and gave a lecture titled "China's Rise and America's Response". In his lecture, Dr. Bush concluded that China's rise has not upset the status quo of the current international system and that conflict between US and China is not inevitable. He stressed the point that US holds the future in its hands and working with other main actors, China and the US can preserve world peace.
