Dear all,

The SNU GSIS BK21 FOUR Program hosts a series of academic events, inviting distinguished speakers to deliver lectures as part of our Special Lecture Series.

For our 45th session, we are pleased to invite Professor Narae Lee from the School of Business and Technology Management, Graduate School of Green Growth and Sustainability, KAIST.

She will deliver a lecture on the theme of “The Strategic Firm and the Sustainability Challenge : Evasion, Compliance, and Alignment.”

Please find the details below:

  • Date & Time: May 8th (Fri), 13:00–14:30
  • Venue: International Conference Room(4F)
  • Language: English
  • Abstract: Firms respond to sustainability pressures in ways that are far more strategic than policy and theory often assume. Drawing on a program of empirical research, this lecture examines when and why institutional pressures produce their intended environmental outcomes, and when they do not. The first part shows that firms systematically evade institutional pressures, displacing environmental harm in ways that are often invisible to policymakers. The second part identifies conditions under which sustainability goals are achieved — through well-designed regulation that aligns incentives, and through private incentives such as commercial interest, worker health, and market demand that happen to point in the same direction. Together, the findings suggest that what determines environmental outcomes is not the existence of institutional pressure, but whether that pressure aligns with the incentives firms already face.
