[SEMU-YÉOL LECTURE] June 2019
Manifestation of Collective Identity: Traditional Korean Dress, Hanbok

Lecturer: Kim Min Jee
Adjunct Professor, Academy of Art University, SF

What made Korean dress Korean?
Along with extensive visual sources, this lecture will trace the development of Korean dress over the two thousand years history up to the latest Hanbok fad on the streets, highlighting on how the dress distinctively manifested the collective identity of Korea while absorbing the then-current internationally dominant trends. The audience will explore how the ‘Koreanness’ featured within the Korean dress refined over time - by both actively responding to the transnational trends and styles and embodying the transformations within Korea. The historical perspective from a global context will allow the audience to understand the currently co-existing Western and Korean dress codes and how traditional attires could keep up with the newly emerging socio-cultural patterns and directions.
