West Asia in the Trump Era: Highlights of Key Geopolitical Developments

This presentation will shed light on key developments and ongoing conflicts in West Asia against the background of the Donald Trump administration's erratic foreign policy towards the region. Among the topics to be discussed are the Saudi-Iranian regional rivalry, the Iran nuclear deal, the crisis of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the war in Syria and the role of regional and international actors.

 

Dr. Ali Fathollah-Nejad is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Doha Center, the Middle East center of the Brookings Institution. He is also an Associate at the Harvard Kennedy School Belfer Center’s Iran Project, and a Research Associate at the Centre of International Cooperation and Development Research (CECID) of the Université libre de Bruxelles. He earned his PhD in International Relations from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Fathollah-Nejad has taught at Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Westminster, and the University of London. He is the author of two monographs: Iran in the Eye of Storm: Backgrounds of a Global Crisis (University of Münster Press, 2007), and The Iran Conflict and the Obama Administration (in German) (Potsdam University Press, 2010). A frequent commentator in media outlets around the world, Fathollah-Nejad is also the author of nearly 100 articles in forums such as The Guardian, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, OpenDemocracy, World Policy Journal, Huffington Post, Géostratégiques, Insight Turkey, Iranian Diplomacy, and the Palestine–Israel Journal of Politics, Economics and Culture.
