“Only when you have thoroughly understood the subject matter, you can make a good solution, and to make a better solution, you must not consider just one side of thinking but both the East and the West and converge the strengths of each,” said Professor Hwy-Chang Moon in his farewell lecture, addressing how academic progress and practical application can be achieved effectively.

On June 4, special guests and students gathered in Socheon Hall to commemorate Professor Moon’s career as a scholar and educator and to congratulate his recent acceptance of SNU Academic Research Award. Followed by the opening remarks by Dean Cheol-hee Park, Professor Young-Hae Han, Dr. Yeon Woo Lee, and Mr. Ted Hyun Moon shared special messages to Professor Moon, relating their memories of Professor Moon as a colleague, mentor, and father.

Professor Moon delivered his farewell lecture titled, “International Studies: Advancing beyond Western Theories.” The lecture encapsulated the key findings from his decades of scholarly works and advice for the future generation, gifting the attendees with wisdom and insight.

Throughout the ceremony, Socheon Hall was filled with expressions of gratitude and love, showing “what a warm person Professor Moon had been to people around him and students,” to quote his colleague, Professor Jiyeoun Song’s words. GSIS will miss his intelligence and warmth.
