Professor Hwy-Chang Moon has received the Spring 2018 SNU Academic Research Award. This award is given to faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding capabilities in academic research. The prize is particularly meaningful to both Professor Moon and GSIS as it comes at a time when Professor Moon is retiring in August, 2018. Professor Moon was selected by the University for his contributions to academic achievements that extended the research in international business and competitiveness. Professor Moon developed a number of theories such as the Generalized Double Diamond Model, Imbalance Theory, and the ABCD Model by extending the mainstream Western theories of international business and competitiveness to include the Asian experiences of business strategy and economic development. He authored many articles and books, published by prestigious journals and publishers such as Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press. During the ceremony, he gave a speech to the faculty of the University to encourage continuing the spirit of quality research. Expressing his gratitude to the GSIS students, faculty and staff, he pledged to donate KRW 10,000,000 (half of the award prize) to GSIS as a development fund for education and research. To commemorate Professor Moon’s acceptance of the award, GSIS will be holding a special lecture on June 4, 2018. This special lecture is titled, “The Development of International Studies and Its Role: Advancing beyond Western Theories.” The event will also include a retirement ceremony for Professor Moon where GSIS families and friends are invited to join and express their gratitude and respect.
